50+ marriage ban repealed?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. 50+ marriage ban repealed?

Post by epidemiks »

Saw this on fb. Perhaps there's hope for you old crusties after all.
I came across this document which says the marriage age limit (of 50 years) for male foreigners marrying Cambodian women was lifted in November 2018, but haven't seen it mentioned anywhere else. People here are saying there is still an age limit and the www.mfaic.gov.kh site still lists the age limit and I can't find this document on that site. But the U.S. embassy site seems to reference this document and says, "According to new marriage requirements issued on by the Government of Cambodia on November 20, 2018, male U.S. citizens wishing to marry Cambodian women must: Have a monthly income of at least US $2,500."
And that's it, no mention of an age limit (and I think it previously listed the age limit on the U.S. embassy site).

Here is the document in question:

Here is the U.S. embassy page:

Someone that I know was going through the marriage registration process recently, they wanted this and that as usual. He asked if they could expedite the procedure as he would be turning 50 soon, they said not to worry about that as it's no longer applicable.

So no teachers will be able to get married then. Maybe a few administrators in the upper echelon might though.

How many working expats make over $2500 monthly?

It seemed inconvenient at first, and a barrier, but later it was kind of a good excuse. If and when I’m ready we can still do a cultural marriage without the paperwork.

If true, sorta raises the question of whether the original reason for implementing it no longer applies?? Aka lonely older chinese dudes who can't find a local wife seeks baby machine/slave from KOW =@

I think most Khmer women would be happy with just the cultural wedding. I mean, if it was no wedding (due to income and/or age requirements) or a less legal cultural wedding.

What do you think?

I had that discussion with Mrs Cargo a while back...she reckoned most khmer girls preferred the legal (official) marriage rather than the buddha one. However, some seem to settle for the latter if barang over 50. However if that rule has indeed been repealed.. then this is a game changer..
