Kith Meng’s Royal Railway Continues until New Agreement: PM HE
02/04/19 12:58
Phnom Penh (FN), March 31 – Cambodian Prime Minister HE stated Monday that Okhna Kith Meng’s Royal Railway will continue to manage the kingdom’s rail operation until the government finds new partner and agreement, addressing at the graduation ceremony of Vanda Institute on Monday.

“The government can not immediately operate the rail system. How could we address the goods on the rail and staffs who are working for Royal Railway?” he stated.

“I want to modernize the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville line and Phnom Penh to Thailand border,” he underlined.

The Royal Government of Cambodia decided to continue the Royal Railway private operation, according to the announcement of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport dated Sunday.

The announcement stated that the ministry needs more time to prepare legal instruments and relevant techniques in managing rail operations; thus, the ministry allows the Royal Railway to continue transporting goods and passengers in the South railway, Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville line.

The ministry added that it is looking for an expert company to modernize the North and South railways in response to the needs of transporting companies, imports and exports companies, investors, and passengers in compliances with the international standard, combined with confidence, safety, and good price.

The ministry underlined that the rail system serves as a backbone for the national economy, creating new development opportunities for the nation.

It is worth nothing that at the 18th Royal Government-Private Sector Forum held Friday at the Peace Palace, the Royal Government decided to withdraw Oknha Kith Meng’s Royal Railway operation, and allow the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to be a temporary manager awaiting for new investor.

Good luck to the people who are taking the railway next weekend.
I don't expect any delays.

Don’t wish for that.

PRC China builds where the Chinese are going. For example, there are rumors of a big road and high speed rail from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville.

If the Chinese take over, it will be for the PRC’s benefit. Will probably change all the signage into Chinese, including departure cities and destinations, as well as departure and arrival times - from Roman numbers, into Chinese as well. And if brave locals and foreigners don’t take the hint, it would probably be staffed with PRC citizens who spoke only Chinese.

If it gets absorbed into the government into a ministry the patronage system would probably get worse. In addition to other wives working there, ministers’ wives and relatives would also need jobs created for them, too.

But at least it would be remain Khmer.

They've had a digging ceremony for the road and about 200m of it already exists.

EDIT - And the Railway line has already gone through Laos and should be at the Cambodian border shortly. So the new high speed link will be here shortly. It's already blasted its way through the Laos mountains.

CRRC of China set to partner Royal Railways to improve railroads in Cambodia
Prime Minister HE has asked Chinese firm CRRC Corporation Limited to partner up with Royal Group to develop Cambodia’s railroad network.

The premier’s request comes a month after the Cambodian government instructed the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to find a partner that can help Royal Railways, a subsidiary of Royal Group, improve the country’s railway system.

At the sidelines of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Forum, held last week in Beijing, Mr HE met with CRRC’s board members. During the meeting, he instructed Sun Chanthol, the Minister of Transport, to begin negotiations with CRRC.

“We want to have a Chinese railway company working with Kith Meng’s Royal Railways to develop our railroad system and make it more efficient,” Mr HE was quoted as saying in a press statement released after the meeting.
