Cambodia reports an outbreak of H5N6 bird flu: OIE
April 18, 2019
PARIS (Reuters) - Cambodia has reported an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N6 bird flu virus among poultry, the Paris-based World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Thursday, citing a report from Cambodia’s agriculture ministry.

The virus infected poultry birds at a market in Daunkeo in the south of the country, the report said.

Happens every year, I guess the WHO or whoever is donating aid had better throw some more money this way to keep it under control... ;) #mugs

I think it's big-picture stuff, not so much about defeating annual outbreaks.
There is a good chance the next big pandemic will come from domestic birds or animals in this part of world.

When the next big deadly flu does go global, and one will, we are all going to be very grateful that somebody is right on top of it.

Four countries report avian flu outbreaks in poultry

In the latest avian flu developments in poultry, China reported a highly pathogenic H7N9 outbreak in zoo birds, Nepal reported three more highly pathogenic H5N1 outbreaks, Iraq reported an event involving highly pathogenic H5N8, and Cambodia reported three outbreaks involving low-pathogenic H7N4.

In developments involving low-pathogenic strains, Cambodia's surveillance of live-bird markets turned up H7N4 in ducks at three markets in different locations, all involving samples collected in February 2018, according to a separate OIE notification. The markets were in Phnom Penh, Prey Veng, and Takeo, all in the south.

So far, it's not known if the H7N4 in the market birds is the same strain as the novel H7N4 virus that infected a woman in China's Jiangsu province at the end of 2017 and whose illness was confirmed in February 2018. Last month, vaccine advisors for the World Health Organization recommended a candidate vaccine virus against H7N4 for pandemic preparedness purposes.
