Man Dies From Rabies a Week After Cat Bite

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

So how do the shots the dogs get differ from human shots?
Are they cheaper and which is the one that is in short supply.

Thank you.

From another thread it is the post-bite exposure that is in short supply. The shots are not compatible across species.

I got bitten by an otter once. True story. "Pursat" the Hairy-nosed otter currently residing at Phnom Tamao - when I bought him down into town from the lake.
First ever recorded white man to be bitten by the world's rarest otter species, I am.

(He had been captured when an infant and spent his whole 12-month life chained up on the front porch of remote floating house on the lake - and hence not suitable for release)

Anyway the concerned conservation org that does the otter thing here in Cambodia, C.I., recommended I get some Rabies shots
- on the basis that otters sit squarely between dogs and cats on the Carnivore taxonomic tree.

So keep that in mind next time you get savaged by an otter in Cambodia.

I'm currently doing the 5 shot course post exposure at Institute Pasteur in Phnom Penh because of a cat bite.
They administer Verorab and the cost there is $34 per injection.

Pre exposure they would do a 3 shot course with the same vaccine and would only "top up" if a bite occured.

You can probably get it done cheaper, but I prefer it there. It's a clean environment and you can trust them to store the vaccine correctly. It's also super quick. I usually walk in, pay and get the shot in ~5 minutes.

Reminder: The current increase in demand for rabies vaccinations began in earnest in Cambodia following a post on social media in February 2019 that a 10 year-old girl had died from rabies, due to a cat bite the previous December. This was a big wake-up call to the general public on the dangers of rabies, which is widespread in Cambodia.
If you get bitten by an animal in Cambodia, you should seek medical advice and treatment immediately.

$15 for 3 shots at Pasteur.
Tetanus was $3.
Once you've read the dictionary, every other book is just a remix.
