What should you take to the countryside for Khmer New Year ?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

What should you take to the countryside for Khmer New Year ?

Post by Anchor Moy »

My tip from the boonies. :dm: Before you leave for the provinces, don't forget the mosquito repellent, maybe a net for sleeping, some coils and a can of all-purpose Raid. It's hot, the insects are out in force, and my barang blood is obviously delicious to local mozzies.
Otherwise, take some money, toys for the kids, a bottle of decent whiskey and a book for yourself, and you should be right.

SWMBO's sister has borrowed the elder kids and yanked them off to Pursat, so that we can enjoy junior's first days at home, and quiet.

I felt sorry for them, when I heard they had been stuck in traffic for 3 hours and hadn't yet passed Kampong Chnang

Just build a bunker like NKOTB
If you enjoy noise pollution and obnoxious driving practices, Phnom Penh is the place for you!

This.

lots and lots of patience and a strong stomach
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

Also, take a torch or a lamp so you can find a safe spot to pee at night. Goes without saying, but...

Take an SUV and try to get out of there as soon as possible. The capital is bad enough at the moment, steaming hot. Why anyone would want to spend time in some
muddy off-the-grid village swinging in a hammock with geese and diseased hounds and cattle snuffling around in the dust is beyond me.
I'm glad my family here are from the capital and nearby area so I don't have to spend too much time in the boonies.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Airbags. I wouldn't go on any highway during KNY.
