Two Teens Arrested after Snatching a Bag from a Chinese Woman in Front of Phnom Penh International Airport

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Cam Nivag wrote:What does "in front of Phnom Penh International Airport " mean? Like she walked out of the building to get a taxi at the curb and they grabbed it? Or was she on the road outside the airport gates trying to save $3 on a taxi into the city? Or was she in a tuk tuk?

I wonder if it was an "inside job" and they knew how much she was carrying.
Judging from the bloody bruises on her right arm it appears she was walking and not in a tuk tuk. And from the “reenactment“ photo it appears the two Jao were on a motorbike when they made the snatch. Probably outside the airport grounds, i mean could they really have expected to make an escape inside the compound? Then again jaos are not known for their smarts.

More importantly did she follow the rules & declare the cash at customs and state her reasons for carrying it into the country? It would be interesting to know the latter.

she was quite pretty and looked older
she knew only what had been told her

That’s 30,000 USD in a bank tie wrappers. How the heck did she get that? I can’t even walk into a bank and request 10,000 USD without lots of questions and paperwork. And how’d she get around the must carry less then 10,000 to leave or enter the country? Sure each of those bank issued wads showed up on x-ray scan.
Common missunderstanding.

You can carry as much cash as you want, even 500k dollar if you want as long as its legal money and you can prove it. 10k usd is just the limit from where you have to declare it and prove its legal.

You made it sound so easy “ as long as its legal money and you can prove it.” If you never carry over 10k, you shouldnt make this statement.

Im just saying that its not illegal to bring over 10k in cash as the guy i quoted thought.

Why is it so difficult for you then? Add something instead of just coming with that.

Yeah in Australia you are asked to declare anything over 10 grand AU and it would be rare any questions are asked, no need to prove anything on the spot. Kids can bring it through. But you will be put on a database. Maybe USA or other countries are different?

I think the Chinese would be more likely than the Cambodians to want to know where her money came from. Straight to the casino I'll bet.

It's good that she's pointing at the only other two people in the picture, otherwise I'd have absolutely no idea who the perpetrators were.

It looks like that in the first picture, perhaps due to devious cropping. :

But in the second picture it appears that she is pinpointing the big guy in the blue shirt and the police officer is placing blame on the piteous small guy.
