Phnom Penh, Cambodia News: On April 11, 2019, a burglar got seriously beaten by local people in Khan Sen Sok, Phnom Penh.

The victim, Meas Rai, a 33-year-old woman, had left her gate unlocked, so the suspect sneaked into the house in order to to steal a motorbike. But the victim saw that the suspect was hiding in the house, so she told her husband to seize him. The suspect tried to run away, but he got caught by a crowd of local people on the Russian Federation road. Then the mob beat him up until he passed out.

The suspect was sent to Teuk Thlar police post for questioning, and then to Khan Sen Sok police station for the case preparation to be submitted following the legal procedure.

So Duarte no longer has the police catching criminals? The crowd in the Philippines catches and punishes criminals now?

When did this happen?

The Davao Death Squad (DDS) is a vigilante group in Davao City, with reported connections to former Davao mayor, and current Philippine President, Rodrigo Duterte. The group is alleged to have conducted summary executions of street children and individuals suspected of petty crimes and drug dealing

Since President Duterte came to power, there have been over 7000 state-sponsored killings in his anti-drug campaign. There have also been many cases where alleged drug users have been killed in police custody or in police operations. In some cases, police officers have even colluded with paid killers and killed for financial incentives.

The victims of these efforts have mainly been poor, young men. The ‘war on drugs’, in effect, is a war on the poor. In some cases, families of killed victims have had to suffer through police theft and planting of evidence.
