Many people in Cambodia with mental illness and problems with drug and alcohol addiction are not getting the care they need, because outside of the main urban centers it is simply not available. Families struggle to cope. One example here:

Kratie, Cambodia News: A 24-year-old man, Khean Sotheareak, a drug addict, tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself on the night of April 8, in Prek Brosob district, Kratie.

The police reported that the victim is a drug addict who had just been released from the correctional center. He is the only son in his family, but he didn't get on with his parents, and often had fits of violence where he would smash up the furniture.

After his release from the correctional center, the victim stayed shut in his room at his parents' house for two days before he stabbed his stomach with a knife, causing the intestines to spill out. Then he left the room to ask for help and was sent the hospital for treatment.
