fat front tyres are a liability in the mud. they float on top and dont push through to get grip, so you have bugger all steering. thats why trail motorbikes have skinny front and fat rear. ballon tyres are for sand. Most offroad bicycles and, judging by the photos electric bicycles. are designed for american style fire trails with muddles. not 2 ft deep cling clay .
Not sure how many horsepower the leccy bikes produces but if its much over 2 or 3 then it will need a different technique and design to traditional bikefor offroad

An ebike would be easier to carry over impassable spots.
I've done lots of off-road riding in sand at high speeds where you want to 'float' and using weight shift and throttle to steer that way. I wouldn't recommend riding like that through mud
ebikes aren't the best for every application, and I wouldn't use mine in long stretches in those conditions, but an alternative to people who don't want to buy gas, do maintenance, pay for licensing and registration, etc

ive had mine up and running for a few weeks now. on the road they are awesome. ive found that proper off road trail riding is a bit of a learning curve.
mine non throttle so if you stop peddling the power stops. on technical climbs its imperative to keep the power on. or you suddenly feel the extra weight.
that said i can now get up things i could not before, even when my knees were good. climbs that steep you needed to be standing to get your power on the pedals but also with your bum on the saddle to keep weight over the back wheel and keep traction. today i got up i climb i considered impossible for a mountain bike for that very reason. i could sit down lean forward to stop the front end lifting and get up the climb.
you can see i have the smaller battery for off-road trail riding and general arsing about, and the bigger one for longer rider where i need a bit more range. i still use the big battery for off road but if im looking to have a quick blast with the lightest i can be the small one it the best.
on saturday i put in a stava time on the local big climb that beat the next ebike by over a min . that was just short of 14 mins of bloody hard work.
all the other bikes were shop bought. to big and heavy to compete against a converted mountain bike.

Might be interesting racing them on the new track they are building for the little scoots out near kampong speu, or even on a mini enduro track. Cannot help thinkin ghtough that whatever you can do with an electric bicycle you could probably do better on a real trail bike (leccy or otherwise). Standing up would be far more normal on a trail ride than sitting, but then the COG of a bicyle is different. Bring enough cash with you and can start an e-bike series. Up Bokor montain might be fun, but even more fun coming down!

While off-road ebikes are over 1000w up to 35,000w, with throttle, and typical batteries 60-72v and higher, with top speeds of 100+km/hr.
The field of e-vehicals are growing very fast wasn't that long ago that they where like golf carts now they are some of the fastest sports cars and formula e

@beaker, Any issue with the traffic police giving you hassle here? I've seen a few people riding some dinky little scooter looking things with pedals but they look like a good platform to run some extended battery packs on and avoid licencing, etc.

I've been passed lots of police checkpoints and they don't do anything. When I was picking up my daughter from school and he was picking up his child. I had a long discussion with guy who was an avid bicyclist who was very interested so I told him all about it, speed etc. The next time I saw him at the school he was in his police uniform. In Siem Reap they have a few of the escooters, I don't remember if they had pedals, but they all have license plates so I would stay away from that style.

I am still not convinced with electric vehicles because no-one seems to have done a real audit of the environmental cost of producing and running them. I am not sure how many miles the batteries last. MAybe someone has a 200,000 mile prius somehwere still going but we really need to get into this total cost of ownership issue. Where does the electricity come form, another fossil burner, or solar or nuclear. And if we really gave a damn would we all have 3 phones each sucking up megawatts a day communicating with datasystems running facebook using up a nuclear powerstation or two each hour? Nothing is free. even solar farms

A good battery will return a 1000 duty cycles. So say you do 40 miles per charge ( cos its pretty flat there) your a better man than me if you can clock up 40,000 miles on a bicycle.
