Introduce Yourself

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. I'm working on retired at 40. That's what this year in the US is mostly about. Securing finances that will let me make a few nice real estate investments I can just live off of for the next 20 years.

Retired at 46? Interesting. Would be keen on knowing more details.
Did he retire at 46, or was he retired 9 years ago when he moved to Thailand? I would like to hear how he managed it. Impressive. :thumb:

...also, why did he leave Thailand after 9 years? Just for a change of scenery, or are things going downhill there in his opinion?

Yes I retired prior to moving to Thailand.

I left Thailand cause I got fed up with the aggression from both Thai and Falang.

I stayed as long as I did because it took me 3 years to sell my house.

For the last 6 years I had a Filipina girlfriend living with me in Thailand that has now finished.

I was on an education visa for the last 4 years costing 33,000 baht a year. Before that I asked Immigration for alternatives and basically they told me I was not 50 and must be working in Thailand even when I showed them a bank account with many millions of baht in that I had moved over from The UK to have my house built.

Welcome, Peter Storm!

Glad you finally made it over! I remember chatting with you a few years ago about your planned move here, but I was using the name "Cambod" back then!

Have fun on CEO!

I know many farangs have, but personally I would never build or even buy a house in a country such as Thailand where the wheels appear to be coming off the rails. Too much political instability and ever-changing visa rules. I suppose it can make sense for those over age 50, especially if they are married to a Thai, but even living in Issan I hear far too many "relationship gone wrong" stories where the hapless farang is left with nothing, sometimes after many years of marriage. I don't just mean the ones married to bar girls half their age either.

Typically a post like this is followed by a particular poster repeating how wonderful the junta is and blah blah blah.

Dear Peter Storm, if I where you, I really, really would listen to that statement Soi Dog just made. Be smart or you are going to lose EVERYTHING !!! You have worked all your life and saved some money, right ? Don't destroy it within a year.

So die Tränen sieht man nicht

Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

Got rid of the girlfriend, already.
Sold the house, already.
Moved to Phnom Penh, already.
