The authorities say that the problem is now under control, but it would be interesting if someone could report on the state of the waste water that continues to run into both Independence and Sokha beaches at the end of this week, after the pumping stations for these two beaches are completed on 27 February.

Sihanoukville’s new sewage systems ‘almost complete’
22 February 2019 | 08:55 ICT
Following public outcry after waste from construction projects in Sihanoukville was found being dumped directly into the sea, provincial authorities have said four sewage systems are now almost complete.

The construction of sewage systems at four beaches was 80 per cent finished, while two pumping stations were scheduled to be completed by the end of February and two others by mid-March, a report issued by the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction’s National Committee for the Management of the Coastal Zone stated.

The report, signed by secretary of state at the Ministry of Land Management Pen Sophal on 18 February, said sewage stations were being built on Independence, Sokha, O’Sa’at and Ochheuteal beaches.

“The construction of four sewage stations is on schedule and they will be finished on time. The first and second pumping stations will be completed on February 27, with the third and fourth stations scheduled to be completed on March 15,” the report said.

Sihanoukville water treatment plants ‘set for testing’
22 March 2019
Officials have said that four facilities designed to prevent waste water from reaching the sea in Preah Sihanouk province would be ready for testing on Monday, as engineers readied to complete the projects before deadline.

Yos Chorm Narady, under-secretary of state at the Ministry of Land, Urban Planning and Construction who is leading the construction team, told The Post on Thursday that the water treatment facilities would be online to give visitors to the province clean beaches for Khmer New Year.

He said construction was almost complete at all the facilities, with just the pipe connection between the four sites and the existing 16ha treatment plant remaining.

“The work is now to connect the pipes with the sewage system so we can pump water to it. We can prevent wastewater from reaching the sea by pumping it uphill."

“However, we cannot guarantee to prevent 100 per cent of polluted water from reaching the sea during the rainy season,” he said.

The four water treatment facilities are located at Independence, Sokha, O’Sa’at and Ochheuteal beaches.

Sihanoukville governor Y Sokleng said the four facilities would back up the existing 16ha treatment facility in Ochheuteal to prevent polluted water reaching rivers and eventually the ocean. Wastewater will be pumped to the Ochheuteal site to be purified before being released into the sea.

“With our existing [16ha] facility, water flows towards low-lying areas, so for high-level areas, such as Commune 2 and Commune 3, we need to pump wastewater from there to the Ochheuteal site,” he said.

Sok Sokhom, the director of the Cambodian National Research Organisation (CNRO) based in the province, told The Post that Sokha, Ochheuteal and Otres beaches had become notorious for having dirty water flowing into the sea and the new facilities should address the problem.

Sihanoukville, Cambodia News: The environmental group, Mother Nature, is calling on government ministers to double-check their information on the current state of the beaches of Sihanoukville, after it was announced on social media that all the beaches are now clean.
Local activists report that outside the Sunshine Bay Hotel and Casino, at the south end of Independence Beach, sewage and waste water continues to flow directly into the sea. Drone footage shows a stream of dark liquid emptying on to the beach, and reports from the site say that it has a particularly foul-smelling odor. There is the same problem on the neighboring Sokha Beach. Unfortunately this means that both beaches are unpleasant and it is not advisable to swim in the water.

Visitors are disappointed and complain when they arrive at Ochheuteal Beach

April 16, 2019 14:00
https://kohsantepheapdaily.com.kh/article/826895.html
In an article on the state of Occheuteal Beach in Sihanoukville, Khmer newspaper Kohsantepheap reports today that there were few International visitors over the Khmer New Year and that Cambodians on holiday are disgusted with the state of the water. The local tourists said they were disappointed because they came to the beach to swim, but the water was murky, black, and smells so bad that they want to go elsewhere. :bad:
