Dry spell causing power cuts: PM
Prime Minister HE on Saturday said the country is now facing an electricity shortage of about 400 megawatts, leading to power outages, and appealed to people, especially those in the business sector, to understand that this is because of an ongoing dry spell.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 5th River Festival in Kampong Chhnang province, Mr HE said the power cuts are being caused by natural factors, adding that Southeast Asian countries have been facing drought and water shortages since February.

“Climate change is not only affecting Cambodia but the whole region. We need water to produce electricity,” he said. “I urge people not to waste water as we will experience a long dry season which will last until June.”

Mr HE appealed to people to understand that there is a need for power cuts during this period and called on those who have generators to use them in their houses, hotels or workplaces to reduce the usage of electricity.

“A large amount of our electricity is produced through hydropower dams, but now there is a shortage of water so the dams can only generate a small amount of electricity,” he said. “We currently lack 400 megawatts, and we are seeking solutions to tackle this issue.

HONG KONG — Drought in South-east Asia may become even more frequent and intense if countries do not take steps to reduce its impact, according to a joint study from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (Escap) and Asean.

“Ready for the Dry Years: Building resilience to drought in South-east Asia”, released on April 19, said the cumulative impact of drought in the region disproportionately affected the poor and heightened inequality, which in turn increased the prospect of violent conflict.

Over the past three decades, droughts have affected more than 66 million people in South-east Asia. One such person is 23-year-old Bonreach Kleng, a volunteer coordinator in Cambodia.

“It’s really hard for us because it’s really hot throughout the year. In some areas of Phnom Penh, there is no water. We live on the third floor so we have to carry water from the ground [floor] to the top,” she said.

“Because of the drought there is no water to produce electricity. The government cannot do anything. They just tell us to buy power banks.”

If governments around the world were really interested in the global warming situation they would have massive programs on tree planting,, especially in areas on the edge of deserts, Australia could be a good example where the planed $ 40 billion to be spent on obsolete war technology ,,,, submarines ,,,,would create the same amount of jobs , jobs, jobs, in tree planting , then re-harvesting those trees . There has been a organization planting trees in Australia. They raise money, plant trees, and publicize how many trees they have planted to raise more money.

However, they dont water the trees, and most of them die. So it is really just a charity for making money for the people involved, not for really making a difference.

Mongkol Borey reservoir drying due to drought: Ministry

The Water Resource Ministry yesterday warned that the water level at the Mongkol Borey reservoir in Banteay Meanchey province is falling due to drought.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the ministry noted that the reservoir only has enough water to supply Mongkol Borey district for three more days and steps are being taken to top up its level.

It said that the reservoir was facing a drop in levels because the water was drawn from it for more dry-season rice cultivation than planned.

The statement noted that water was meant to be used to cultivate 7,000 hectares of paddy fields but was drawn to irrigate 80,000 hectares.

Chan Youttha, a spokesman for the Water Resource Ministry, said yesterday that the provincial water resources department and local authorities are pumping water from the Serei Saophoan reservoir in Serei Saophoan district to supply the Mongkol Borey reservoir.

He appealed to local authorities to remind farmers not to cultivate more dry-season paddy and conserve water for them and others to use for daily needs.

Mr Youttha said people must conserve water because the dry season will last for a long time.

Cambodia’s water problem: water is primarily provided by the Mekong. Mainland China dams up the Mekong. Thus causing a wholly man made climate change.

Solution: stop the dams and let the water flow.

But it’s so much easier to blame the West and ask for more handouts then to bite the handler.

Oversimplification? Absolutely!
