Air quality in Ratanakiri dry season 2019

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Air quality in Ratanakiri dry season 2019

Post by Kammekor »

Lately I have noticed the air quality in Ratanakiri has been pretty bad, so bad that I have been forced to leave my (open) workspace in my house to change it to an (air conditioned / air controlled) coffeeshop. I can simply tell it from the (constant) smell and a constant swelling in my nose something is wrong. Visibility is limited too, maybe 3-4 km's only. I have downloaded some apps to my phone to get my feelings confirmed, and I got my confirmation.

The app Plume gives insane levels of pollution during the late afternoon and early mornings (now: Bangkok: 38, Ratanakiri: 263, Phnom Penh: 19, Beijing: 163).

Air visual gives a pollution level of 165 (Phnom Penh: 79, Bangkok average: 67, Beijing: 162).

Even when I take the numbers with a grain of salt due to (maybe) unreliable equipment the numbers are still extremely high for a remote province with hardly any industry and light traffic.

I am aware the locals burn their rubbish twice a day, leading to a spike in pollution locally, but I am still surprised. Some major burning must be going on like in the north of Thailand, but I haven't seen it myself. Maybe in the Kohneak / Sem Monorom area?

Ideas, anyone?

No answers for you OP, but Siem Reap pollution may be from Thailand.

Where in Ratanakiri are you? It seems nice and clear just 10 km north of Banlung and no issues of air I can tell of.

It's a combination of airborne dust from unsealed roads, fallow fields and the remains of Vireachey National Park being pushed into piles and burned off.

There are also problems in Laos; this is a SEA pollution problem.
