Siem Reap or Kampot? New here :)
Hi we are possibly looking into spending sometime in Cambodia, we have watched many YouTube videos, scoured through forums and have narrowed our home base to either Kampot or Siem Reap. I am hoping some of you can give us some advice on where you think would be best. A little about us: our son is 3, we love the beach however do not need to be close to it as we can take trips to Kampot if needed (is this feasible?), we would like to have a community of people who speak English and maybe have children our sons age, we enjoy markets and street food but also really enjoy our coffee! It would just be me and my son at first so would just need a little studio with fridge and kitchenette and if in siem reap hopefully access to a pool and have A/C. Basically where do you feel is a better home base as far as affordability, comfort and our basic needs? Also if anyone has any contacts in those locations for a place for my son and I the first year. What I gather is siem reap has more going on then Kampot....is this right? Which is why I am leaning towards siem reap, however if Kampot has as much to offer please I would love to hear it! We are planning on this may or June to be our arrival if all goes to plan! Thank you!!

I suggest, when you arrive, spend some time in each place, then decide.
Siem Reap may be a bit more expensive, as a lot of tourists go there.
In Kampot it rains a lot in the wet season, so you may stay inside more.

Why are you ruling out PP?
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.

If you choose to live in Siem Reap, trips to the beach will take you quite a long time by car (10-15 hours) because you have to go around the big lake, would be my comment here. You could cut that down to about 6-7 hours if you want to fork out for plane tickets from SR to PP, THEN a car down to the beach.

One of the pros of SR is you can get an apartment with AC and a pool for as little as $250. As has been pointed out, it is nowhere near a beach. But it's so over-touristed there... I'd consider living there if I could find the 'locals' part (if there is one?).
Kampot on the other hand, whilst also a tourist town, has a much more relaxed vibe.

Tourist are most concentrated in and close to the town centre and along National Rd 6. Outside the town centre (about 10 min. from Pub street by motorbike), you can find plenty area's where you can live between locals, like I do.timmydownawell wrote: ↑Sun Mar 03, 2019 12:36 pm One of the pros of SR is you can get an apartment with AC and a pool for as little as $250. Siem Rep is a BUSY city cause of all the tourists and gets very hot for few months each year
Kampot is very laid back on the river with plenty of places to eat and rent.
