Cambodian schools

Post by Funflyer »

Can anyone advise about schools in Phnom Penh, Cambodian not international? My kids are half Khmer and we're thinking about coming back to Phnom Penh for a year from Australia. I know there are Cambodian schools that offer English programs half day and Khmer half day. Can anyone recommend any schools that do this and indicate roughly the fees for primary age children? We could home school them via the Australian schools of isolated and distance education but I'd prefer to send them to school so they can meet and socialise with other kids. Thanks for any advice.

My friend is an english teacher who has worked here for 10 years. He is sending his khmer son to Bak Touk, near Orussey market.
He says that students from there that pass through his school later are consistently better than anywhere elseIn particular they have better critical thinking skills.
It is popular so you need to apply early. You will have to check that they do half english. IF they are only here for a year then a good private school should be under $1000, just a matter fo finding one

I know you said not international but....you gotta realize just because the word international is in the name means nothing here.

That being said I'm sending a relative to Milky Way International school. It's definitely not international but has Khmer and English and she seems to be learning quite a bit. It's only $130 a quarter and $10 for the school bus Save a little if you pay for a whole year upfront.

Some questions and remarks.

Are your kids able to read / write Khmer? Like they can do in English?
If not, forget about any Khmer curriculum, it'll be a waste of time. They couldn't read whatever the teacher would be writing on the whiteboard, couldn't read the books, couldn't do any exercises without someone supporting them.
If your kids manage the Khmer script they can enroll in a Khmer program without problems, but to be honest I don't know many 'half Khmer kids' living abroad being able to manage the script.

English probably will be a problem for them too, because your kids will be miles ahead of the kids they will be studying with since most of them are not raised in Australia with English as their mother tongue.

Maybe a local Aussie school run by Aussies for Aussie kids in the late afternoon (after regular classes) is your best bet.

Thanks for the informative replies guys. Milky Way International School sounds interesting and I'll definitely look into it. Also, Kammekor, your comments are very insightful! I'm not aware of any Aussie schools (except for the very expensive Australian International school) Do you know of any that might provide this kind of service?

And always remember the best school is at home and the best teachers are the parents. It's there that they are taught things that no school will teach and it's there that you., the teacher can see exactly how their education is progressing.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Well said Duncan and as well as being their dad, I'm also a fully qualified teacher. I could easily school them at home using the Western Australian School of Isolated and Distance Education Program (SIDE) which is delivered mainly online and is quite comprehensive. It would also keep them up-to date with their Australian curriculum However, I'd like them to spend at least some time at a school, for socialisation with other kids too.

I don't know, but I know a lot of expat communities in Phnom Penh organize their own 'school' after regular school hours. Ask the Aussie expat community. Most of these schools are focused on the language & culture in their home country.
