You're right. By looking at the plants themselves, it's practically impossible to say whether it's good quality bud or trash (especially when they're that young). You can't even tell if they're males or females (at least I can't).
However, by looking at the environment in which the bud is growing, you can tell it's trash. Insects, variations in temperature and humidity, the PH level of your water, and the amount and nature of nutrients added to your water are just a few things that will drastically change the quality of your bud.

In a way yes as different purity give subtly different colour, but I take your point.

Is the Thai grass we used to get in the mid '70s still obtainable? Ive tried different weed in Thailand but nothing like the lovely Thai stick we got back in the day..

the stuff i brought legally back in Oct in Ca was much sweeter, stronger than the thai stick of the 60's-70's
But from a pr point of view, those 4 grms sticks dipped in O were nice
