U.K. citizen and South Africa citizen

Post by taruwinga123 »

Needed advice of best route, I’m UK citizen and other half is SA citizen and we are marrying later in year in SA.
We want to settle.. at least for a few years in a country not U.K. or SA.. Cambodia is one option.
I’m 53 and other half is under 40.
We want to live in Cambodia long term so we don’t have to keep moving around. I’ve an income from rental property and from director of a business in U.K. .. draw a modest salary...
what’s best/ most concrete way of application for long term residing in the country for us both?

For your situation there's currently no easy way to stay long time in Cambodia, you would have to make visa runs once every 2-6 months, depending on the visa you choose / they give you.

The skin color of your partner might have an influence on this.

Your 2 years away from easily getting a retirement visa (assuming you don't plan on working in Cambodia). You can apply for one at your current age but will need to show you have a steady source of income. Not sure if they will take your income from property ownership or not - immigration seems to like government sponsored pensions over all else.

There is a 6 month visa that is given no problem - but its to allow you to look for work while in Cambodia. But I couldn't speak to whether or not that can then be turned into a retirement visa when you hit 55.

You don't mention if you've been to Cambodia. If not, I'd highly recommend spending at least a few weeks prior to deciding to move here. You might want to consider Thailand, especially if you have any health care needs. If you chose Cambodia based on a magazine article just be aware that its not necessarily as cheap as they claim (depending on how you live) and I've found that many people that live here without really having a reason to be here - end up very unhappy.

Be aware that you can't own land. Your only ownership option is to purchase an apartment/condo that is not on the ground floor of a development. So your pretty much consigned to renting.

Good Luck and Congratulations on your upcoming marriage.
