A Cambodian-owned satellite - dream or reality ?

PM Wants Fast Data Satellite
Friday, 16 December 2016
Cambodia should have its own satellite to make high-speed broadband available to all, Prime Minister HE said yesterday.

The prime minister also proposed that the Royal Group, a local conglomerate, partner with other companies to make the Kingdom’s satellite dream a reality.
“I suggest that we should consider launching a Cambodia-owned satellite,” said Mr. HE in his speech.

Turning to Kith Meng, the chairman and CEO of Royal Group, who was in the audience, Mr. HE said: “We must check this issue, Okhna Kith Meng.
“It is time to partner with other companies to have a satellite owned by Cambodia.
“When we have our own satellite, high-speed internet access can be delivered directly to small user-based terminals all around Cambodia.
“Providing affordable high-speed internet access for Cambodia’s unconnected populations is a huge challenge and a big investment, but it can be done,” added the prime minister.

In 2011, Royal Blue Skies – a subsidiary of the Royal Group – received a concession from the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications to launch Cambodia’s first satellite that would deliver TV and internet to Cambodia and also to other Asean nations.
The Cambodian Satellite 1 project was set to take-off in 2013, with the satellite estimated to cost between $250 million and $350 million to build and launch into space.

“So far there has not been any progress on Cambodian Satellite 1, despite the ministry granting Royal Blue Skies a license to launch and put it into orbit,” Im Vutha, a spokesperson for the Telecom Regulator of Cambodia, told Khmer Times...

The Cambodian Satellite 1 project was set to take-off in 2013,
The completion date is always on the optimistic side. Lol.

The Cambodian Space Project is an outdated concept.

Sounds more like a national pride thing than having any actual utilitarian purpose.

Kingdom’s satellite project still under study
February 12, 2019
The Telecom Regulator of Cambodia yesterday said that the Kingdom’s plan to launch its first satellite is still being studied after the Defence Ministry denied media reports that it will be sent into space in 2021.

TRC spokesman Im Vutha yesterday said that the project has not yet been approved.

“Cambodia’s plan to launch our first satellite is still under study and we do not have a time frame to launch it,” he said.
He noted that local conglomerate Royal Group and Beijing-based China Great Wall Industry Cooperation are conducting a feasibility study on the launch of the satellite.

“The project has not been approved because we are still studying issues regarding the launch, including technical ones,” Mr Vutha said. “The project is still in the planning stage.”

In 2011, Royal Blue Skies – a subsidiary of the Royal Group – was commissioned by the Defence Ministry to launch a satellite to deliver TV and Internet services to the Kingdom and other Asean countries.

The Cambodian Satellite I project was set to take off in 2013 and its construction and launch was estimated to cost between $230 million and $350 million.

Defence Ministry spokesman General Chhum Sucheat yesterday denied reports by media outlets that the launch will take place in 2021.

Will it be launched before the new bridge across the mekong from naga or the new airport, both of which have been planned since shortly before the dinosaurs were wiped out....

Good news! Satellite launched.

Phnom Penh high school students launch Kingdom’s first satellite

A group of Khmer high school students have successfully launched a satellite 50 km above the earth. After they spent five weeks researching and developing the satellite, it travelled into the second layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.

A student at E2STEM and a team leader in developing the prototype, Cheang Thorn Sopanha told Khmer Times yesterday that the cubesat, a type of miniaturised satellite used for space research, named “COSMOS” was developed by a group of high school students at the E2STEM School of Preah Yukanthor High School. The satellite model is capable of capturing moisture, pressure, temperature, and altitude in the second layer of the Earth, and of capturing images from the air.

There are eight members in the team, seven boys and a girl, six students from grade 10, one from grade 11 and another from grade 12.

The satellite can fly a distance of 30 to 40 kilometres and has a maximum altitude of 50 kilometres from the ground, for four hours.

The cubesat satellite developed by the team is to be used in the First Global Challenge, in which they will represent Cambodia.

“This satellite is one of the three disciplines that we participate in the First Global Challenge 2021. The third test required us to produce a cubesat satellite to launch into the second layer of our Earth’s atmosphere,” said Panha.

Some materials were sent by the programme for them to develop and design into this cubesat, before launch, he added.

Currently, the team is ranked 33th out of 176 countries, after completing two disciplines. With the success of the team in launching a satellite model, the third discipline of the world competition, Sopanha expects his team to rank even higher.

A mentor at E2STEM School, Rith Oudom, told Khmer Times yesterday that there are four mentors in this programme and that he is responsible for technical guidance.

“We have tried to fly it twice. The first attempt was on Sept 24 in Tboung Khmum province, but due to some technical failures, we were forced to return to Phnom Penh. The second, successful, attempt was on Sept 26 at the same location,” said Oudom.

The flight started at 12pm and it was found at 4pm in Srey Santhor district, Kampong Cham province.

“We did not choose Phnom Penh for our flights because, according to our wind and weather simulations, it may have landed on Oral mountain, making recovery difficult.”

Anxiously awaiting the "Iron Grandpa wants the data of the 50km satellite" as if they saw something literally no one else could see.

Kudos for this school project! 'Satellite' is strictly not correct, since a satellite is a manmade or natural object that orbits around a body in space :) This would have been a helium-filled balloon with the payload hanging underneath. As the lighter-than-air helium balloon rises, it expands, due to the lower air pressure as the altitude increases, and this causes the balloon skin to expand (so as to equalise the air pressure inside the balloon with the outside). Finally, the balloon expands so much that it ruptures, and the payload falls to the ground. If it's carrying a GPS locator, then it is much easier to find than a payload (such as on a weather balloon), which may not have such a locator. Hence the need to transmit data continually during the flight.

(I worked as a satellite design engineer for 20 years, and still do this kind of work as my daily hobby!)
