Cambodia taxi information

Do you have a Cambodian trip report you want to share? Post it here, and feel free to link to your blog if it's a travel blog for Cambodia, South East Asia, or anywhere really. You can ask and answer questions about travel advice in Cambodia or just share your pictures and videos with us. Most people who live in or visit Cambodia have also checked out nearby countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, and you can get to most of these countries by traveling overland, so put any travel plans, reviews or questions here. Discussions about dirt bike trails in here as well.

Friends used this taxi driver from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville recently and said he was great. Very friendly, good driver, good vehicle, and speaks fluent English. $60.

Thought I'd put this here because my experiences of taxis from PP to SHV are not all good, some were terrible, and I've noted this driver for future use. I think he's based in PP, but drives often to SHV, Kampot and Kep.

For those new to Cambodia, you can either book a taxi for just yourself, or share the taxi with others. Those wanting to save money, may share a taxi, or catch a bus. The minivans are often a little cheaper than share taxis and buses, but a lot of the drivers don't speak English. Taxis and minivans are often a bit faster than buses.

However, share taxis and local minivans may be less comfortable than a VIP minivan, where you should get one seat per person. Otherwise, normally, when travelling by local transport, taxis or minivans, you are allocated half to three-quarters of the space of a western person. That's fine if you don't mind being squashed and you will meet local people so you can practice your Khmer skills on your neighbors, their children, and their chickens if you are lucky.
Buses are good for seeing the countryside (slowly) and also good for meeting people and experiencing how the locals travel.
However, steer clear of night buses and Virath Buntham bus company if you can. Both have bad safety records.
Anyway, back to taxis.

There are two types of foreigners in Cambodia. Those who want things to be easy and don't care too much how much it costs, and those who want to live economically and not spend too much.

Yes, for the sake of saving a few lousy bucks you can spend 5 hours with someone sitting on your lap and someone else's elbow in your guts while being squashed from the side by an old lady with tuberculosis.

You might pay $80 from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap by private taxi. You might pay less than $10 by bus, a savings of $70. If you do the same for a return trip, that is a savings of $140. That is a lot of meals for a person with limited financial resources. Normally buses are fairly good.

Minivan from Kampong Cham to Ratanakiri: 60$

The fact we have used the same driver before (never the whole van) might have had an influence on the price.
