Fireworks Ban Over Chinese and Vietnamese New Year
Cambodia News: All sale and unauthorized use of fireworks during the up-coming Chinese and Vietnamese New Year celebrations has been banned by Phnom Penh City Hall, as well as by authorities in Siem Reap and Koh Kong.
Many market sellers make extra money selling fireworks "behind the counter" during the different periods of New Year celebrations, and many feel that Chinese New Year would not be the same without fireworks, so blackmarket sales of fireworks will probably continue to thrive this year. Some sellers have admitted this much, saying they will continue despite the interdiction.
However, the authorities have said that they consider fireworks to be a dangerous fire hazard, and that police will seize any fireworks that they find on sale without a permit.
