Forest Shootout Between Protecters and Poachers in Mondulkiri
Mondulkiri, Cambodia News: At 3:30 am on January 29, 2019 at the Oro Vire in Trapeang Kor Koh, in Srei village, Koh Nhek district of Mondulkiri, six rangers and police officers were fired on while working with the Mondulkiri Environmental Department.
The environment officers were patrolling the jungle and were staking out an illegal camp when a man drove up on a motorbike loaded with wildlife carcasses. When they went to detain the suspect and confiscate the dead animals, shots were fired at the officers, and Cheng Chanthy, a park ranger, was hit by two bullets.
The victim has been evacuated to Calmette hospital in Phnom Penh, and environment officers in Mondulkiri are hunting for the poachers.
