The erosion of the riverbank at Elephant Park in Kampong Cham is quite considerable, and it is unsafe to walk along parts of the waterfront which have been taped off to prevent public access. This area is located on the central riverfront in Kampong Cham just across from the well-known Mekong Hotel.

Five Houses Collapse into the Mekong Near Kratie
29 November 2018
Image
Kratie province, Cambodia News: On the night of 26 November 2018, five houses in Koh Kantour Village, Chhlong district were carried into the Mekong when the riverbank collapsed after heavy rains. Fortunately, the occupants were able to gather up a few of their possessions and escape in time.

The authorities blamed the passing cyclone Usagi, but villagers say that sand-dredgers are out on the river every day removing sand and weakening the riverbanks. Authorities have said that local people should stop building on the riverbanks because it is dangerous. Twenty houses in the Chhlong district have been lost in the same manner.

Kandal province, Cambodia News: There has been yet another consequent collapse of the Mekong riverbank in the village of Russey Chroy commune, Muk Kampoul district, Kandal province. The village has experienced frequent landslides on the riverfront, especially over the last 10 years.
Local authorities said that between 2010 and 2014, more than 100 to 200 meters of shoreline has fallen into the river. The area suffered heavy losses again in late 2018.

Specialists at the Ministry of Mines and Energy said experts had monitored and tracked the situation since 2015, particularly the problem of National Road 6A which runs along the Mekong. They give a number of explanations for this "natural disaster", blaming water currents, water depth, recent flooding, and the bend in the river.
However, one of the boats that is pumping out sand from the riverbed close to the site is to be shut down temporarily while the competent authorities investigate the reasons for this latest riverbank collapse. Many local people believe that the sand dredging is responsible for the increasing erosion.

14yo Kid Missing at Riverbank Collapse Site, Kandal Province
January 1, 2019
One missing following collapse of Kandal riverbank

Image
One child is missing in Kandal province after he and three of his mates slipped and plunged into the Mekong river as they were playing nearby a recently-collapsed portion of the riverbank.

A 50-metre portion of the riverbank in Mok Kampol district collapsed yesterday, causing damage to a pagoda’s fence, a home and a stupa.

Yearn Sath, chief of the district penal department, yesterday said four boys under the age of 18 slipped and plunged into the river while they were playing nearby the collapsed riverbank.

Rescuers managed to fetch three of the boys out of the river, but 14-year-old Kun Kimheng remains missing.

“Police begged people not to stand near the collapsed riverbank because it is dangerous,” Mr Sath said. “Unluckily, the boys fell into the river. Three of them were rescued, but one is still missing. Police are looking for him”

Thim Bunthol, a school teacher in Roka Rong commune, yesterday said Kimheng and his mates went to see the collapsed portion of the riverbank during a study break.

“People are scared to go near the area because they saw the collapsed portion of the riverbank,” Mr Bunthol said. “The family of Kimheng has hired local fishermen to help look for him, but they are also scared.”

Body of the missing boy found
The body of the missing boy was found at 8 am today after disappearing for three days from river bank collapse in Kandal province’s Mok Kampol district.

Yearn Sath, chief of district penal police bureau, said that authorities found the body of Kun Kimheng , 14-year-old boy near the collapsed river bank after he slipped and plunged into Mekong river while he was playing with three other boys.

Kith Menghun, a school teacher, said that for a few days, authorities lost hope because they could not locate the body.

He said that the school management warned all students not to visit the collapsed river bank or nearby to avoid accidents. We don’t know when it happens again,” he said.

On Monday, more than 50 meters of river bank were collapsing in Mok Kampol district and destroyed some part of pagoda’s fence and a stupa down into the river.

Fitting picture with the 3 sand dredgers in the background, seeing as this is what's aiding the degradation of riverbanks.

Tens of millions of dollars, untaxed, being made selling this sand to Singapore.

Good for you. My over arching point remains. Dredging is destabilizing the riverbanks.

Funny though, since the 2017 ban the number of dredgers does not seem to have decreased. In fact, I'd be bold enough to say that I see even more of those ships loitering up and down the waterways.

Where's all that sand going?

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Duncan.

Head up river about 20 km to Prek K'dam bridge and there were big stockpiles where the boat were unloading .It's been a while since I was last there. Mostly used for land filling but the better sand used for construction concrete.
