Cambodia’s victorious Vovinam martial arts athletes returned to the kingdom yesterday, along with a haul of 22 medals from the recent World Vovinam Championships in India.
The team were greeted at Phnom Penh International Airport and then were whisked away in a motorcade through the streets of the capital.
Cambodia finished third in the overall standings, behind Vietnam and Algeria, in the 45-nation competition in New Delhi and captured an unprecedented four gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals.
“In more than 10 years, Cambodia has never won so many medals,” said Vath Chamroeun, the secretary general of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia who was part of the welcoming committee.

Vovinam federation urges development
20 March 2018
The president of the Cambodia Vovinam Federation hailed members’ successful completion at the weekend of a refereeing course in the Vietnamese martial art.
“Such things will help the sport become more developed, said Rat Sokhorn, president of the Vovinam Federation of Cambodia. “And moreover, it’s a step towards reaching international standards.
“Referees are very important to the sport and to the trainees. The course gave the participants a clear understanding of the rules of practice. By reaching the international standards required by judges and referees, our athletes can also benefit from their expertise.”
Vovinam is a martial art in which fighters use kicks, grapples, throws and even weapons. Unlike taekwondo, the Korean martial art, it is not yet recognised as an Olympic sport and as a result receives little funding.
The sport has flourished in Cambodia in recent years and the kingdom famously finished third in the overall standing at the 2017 World Vovinam Championships in India.

Vovinam targets referee development
The Vovinam Federation of Cambodia has said it will pursue developing the standard of adjudicating, and refereeing by officials as it targets a successful 2023 SEA Games campaign.
Ou Ratana, first Vice-President of the federation, said Cambodia is seeking to build its capacity ahead of the regional showpiece.
“At the moment, the federation is only trained in the locally, he told media yesterday. “But the federation will be sending officials to overseas competition where they can learn technical enhancements to help our preparation for 2023.”
In March of 2018, some members successfully completed a refereeing course in the Vietnamese martial art. “Such things will help the sport become more developed, said Rat Sokhorn, president of the Federation. “And moreover, it’s a step towards reaching international standards.

Organisers said despite being home to the sport, Vietnam will find it tough going to defend their top position because global athletes have made remarkable progress recently.
Algeria, France, Iran, Myanmar and the hosts are all threats this year.
Vovinam has been developed for 81 years and spread widely to the world with more than 2 million people practising in nearly 60 countries.
Apart from regional, continental and world championships, Vovinam has been part of the Asian Beach Games and Asian Indoor Games, among others./.
