Cambodian Activist Youk Chhang to Receive 'Asia's Nobel Prize'
Bravo !
Cambodian activist Youk Chhang who investigated genocide and Indian doctor Bharat Vatwan who rescued homeless recognised with ‘Asia’s Nobel Prize’
UPDATED : Thursday, 26 July, 2018, 10:20pm
A Cambodian genocide survivor who helped document the Khmer Rouge atrocities and an Indian psychiatrist who led the rescue of thousands of mentally ill street paupers to treat and reunite them with their families are among the six winners of this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Awards, regarded as Asia’s version of the Nobel Prize.
The awards, named after a Philippine president who died in a 1957 plane crash, are to be presented in Manila on August 31.
“All are unafraid to take on large causes. All have refused to give up despite meagre resources, daunting adversity and strong opposition,” Carmencita Abella, president of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation, said of the winners. “Their approaches are all deeply anchored on a respect for human dignity and a faith in the power of collective endeavour.”
Youk Chhang lost his father, five of his siblings and nearly 60 of his relatives during the genocidal Khmer Rouge rule in the late 1970s and subsequent civil war, but he escaped and found his way to the United States as a refugee. He returned home after order was restored and headed a centre that documented the horrific violence in aid of the Khmer Rouge war crimes trials.
The massive scope of his group’s work included collecting more than a million documents, producing digital maps of more than 23,000 mass graves and excavating remains for forensic examination. Youk, 57, is currently involved in a project to develop a museum, archives, library and a graduate program on crimes against humanity.

Re: Cambodian Activist Youk Chhang to Receive 'Asia's Nobel Prize'
Good article on his work here:
Youk Chhang: A Cambodian National Treasure
Leading by example, he taught a nation how to forgive without forgetting
By Peter Maguire
April 27, 2017
Youk Chhang, the executive director of the Documentation Center of Cambodia will receive the Center For Justice and Accountability’s Judith Lee Stronach Human Rights Award on May 4, 2017 in San Francisco.
It is no coincidence that Youk Chhang is Cambodia’s most trusted civic leader. Leading by example, he taught a nation how to forgive without forgetting. Like Angkor Wat and Tonle Sap Lake, Chhang is nothing less than a Cambodian national treasure.
The youngest son of a Phnom Penh gem merchant’s nine children, Youk Chhang was 14 years old when the Khmer Rouge marched into the capital on April 17, 1975, and forced him from his home at gunpoint. The teenager walked in the direction of what he believed to be his mother’s village, four months later was reunited with his family at one of Democratic Kampuchea’s newly established “compulsory communes.” There, he worked like a slave and death became as common as life...

Re: Cambodian Activist Youk Chhang to Receive 'Asia's Nobel Prize'
Renowned researcher to get ‘Asian Noble Prize’
31 July 2018
Renowned researcher Youk Chhang, who painstakingly documented Khmer Rouge horrors, has won the 2018 Ramon Magsaysay Award, which is widely regarded as Asia’s Nobel Prize.
The executive director of the Documentation Centre of Cambodia was among six in Asia who received this year’s award.
The commission in the Philippines which picks the winners said last week in a statement that Mr Chhang was selected as a winner for preserving historical memory and for his efforts in promoting healing and justice.
“In electing Youk Chhang to receive the 2018 Ramon Magsaysay Award, the board of trustees recognizes his great, unstinting labour in preserving the memory of the Cambodian genocide, and his leadership and vision in transforming the memory of horror into a process of attaining and preserving justice in his nation and the world,” the statement said.
Mr Chhang, whose father was killed under the Khmer Rouge, said yesterday that the award was a reminder for people not to give up hope.

Re: Cambodian Activist Youk Chhang to Receive 'Asia's Nobel Prize'
Suffering spurs life of investigation
August 10, 2018
As the head of the Documentation Center of Cambodia, Mr Chhang has been working to heal the barrier between him and his mother, and bring closures to millions of other victims. His work has been recognised this year with the Ramon Magsaysay Award, widely regarded as Asia’s Nobel Prize.
“The chaos in the country separated us. Having been apart from her for so long, I don’t know to recreate a bond between us,” says Mr Chhang, who has devoted the award to his mother. “It’s just like after having thrown a glass on the floor, we are unable to fix the shattered pieces.”

6 Asians receive Ramon Magsaysay Awards for accomplishments

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Six people were honored Friday as this year's winners of the Ramon Magsaysay Awards, known as Asia's version of the Nobel Prize, including a Cambodian genocide survivor who helped document the Khmer Rouge atrocities and an Indian psychiatrist who led the rescue of thousands of mentally ill street paupers.
The others who received the prize at a ceremony in Manila were a Filipino who led peace talks with communist insurgents, a polio-stricken Vietnamese who fought discrimination against the disabled, an East Timorese who built care centers for the poor amid civil strife and an Indian who tutored village students to help them pass exams.
The awards, which were announced last month, are named after a Philippine president who died in a 1957 plane crash.
"All this effort that I have been trying for so many decades is not in vain, it's been recognized," said Youk Chhang, who lost his father, five of his siblings and nearly 60 of his relatives during the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime and subsequent civil war in the 1970s. He escaped as a refugee to the United States before returning home to head a center that documented the horrific violence in aid of Cambodian war crimes trials.
Youk Chhang said in an interview earlier this week that his recognition is also "a message to other institutions, to other countries around the world that learning from the past mistakes is significant, is important even though Cambodia has a long way to go."
The massive scope of his group's work included collecting more than a million documents, producing digital maps of more than 23,000 mass graves and excavating remains for forensic examination. Youk Chhang, 57, is currently involved in a project to develop a museum, archives and library and a graduate program on crimes against humanity.

Scholar: Vietnamese army instrumental in changing Cambodia history
VNA Thursday, December 27, 2018 - 14:51:00 Print
At the interview (Source: VNA)
Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnamese army was instrumental in defeating the Khmer Rouge regime, changing history in Cambodia, according to Executive Director of the Documentation Centre of Cambodia Youk Chhang.
In a recent interview with Vietnam News Agency, Chhang said many Cambodians fleeing the genocidal regime had told the world about the catastrophe, but no country was willing to interfere. He added that he had collected several documents proving that Amnesty International tried to negotiate with Khmer Rouge in 1976, but it came to failure. Therefore, genocide had to be ended by military force and the Vietnam People’s Army is the only one in the region that could deal with it.
He said but for Vietnam’s help, Cambodia would have become a dictatorial country.
On the life sentence given to ex-leaders of Khmer Rouge Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphon, Chhang said it marks an end to Khmer Rouge regime from the legal aspect. The next task is ending the regime via education which he said is especially important for Cambodian people to look toward the future while not forgetting lessons of the past.
