Ma Jian: China's ex-intelligence chief jailed for life
27 December 2018
China's ex-intelligence chief Ma Jian has been sentenced to life in prison for crimes including taking bribes and insider trading, a court says.
Ma had been put under investigation in 2015 and expelled from the Communist Party one year later.
He pleaded guilty and would not appeal, a court in the north-eastern Liaoning province said.
Many high-ranking officials have been toppled as part of President Xi Jinping's vast anti-corruption drive.
Ma Jian was vice-minister in the powerful ministry of state security, which oversees foreign and counterintelligence operations.
His case is linked to that of one of China's most-wanted fugitives, exiled property tycoon Guo Wengui, who has published a series of allegations of corruption among top members of the Communist Party.
Ma used his position to help Guo Wengui, who now lives in New York, further his business interests, the Dalian Intermediate People's Court said in a statement.
He took more than 100m yuan (£11.4m; $14.5m) in bribes and profited by trading stocks based on insider information, it added.
More than one million officials have been punished in the anti-corruption drive started by Mr Xi when he took power in 2012, the government says.
The campaign has been described by some as a massive internal purge of opponents, on a scale not seen since the days of Mao Zedong, in whose Cultural Revolution many top officials were purged.

I think it's more a purge of his political opponents than anything to do with corruption, really

But then is it possible to interfere with Xi’s monopoly?
Isn’t he untouchable now. “Paramount leader” and all.

China launches investigation into former justice minister
BY: Agence France-Presse October 2, 2021 2:39 PM
Beijing, China | Anti-graft authorities in China announced Saturday they were investigating the country's former justice minister, the latest senior cadre to be drawn into Beijing's sweeping corruption drive.
A growing number of top Communist figures have been caught up in President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign, which critics say has also served as a way to remove the leader's political enemies since he came to power in 2013.
Fu Zhenghua -- who has held key roles in Beijing including minister of justice and head of the Public Security Bureau -- is being investigated for "serious violation of discipline and law", according to a statement from authorities.
Once Beijing's top cop, Fu is thought to have led the corruption investigation into Zhou Yongkang, the former security czar who was jailed in 2015 in one of the campaign's most high-profile cases.
But he is now facing his own investigation by anti-graft body the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI).
Fu is currently the deputy director of the social and legal affairs committee on the standing committee of the largely ceremonial advisory body, the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
The CDDI's statement comes just days after the former deputy public security minister Sun Lijun -- who oversaw security in Hong Kong during months of unrest -- was expelled from the party for corruption.
Sun was accused of keeping a personal stash of confidential documents, absconding from his pandemic-fighting duties and paying for sex, and will face further investigation and prosecution.
More than a million officials have been punished under the anti-corruption campaign so far, which has been a cornerstone of Xi's tenure.
In September the former head of Chinese liquor firm Kweichow Moutai, the world's most valuable spirits company, was jailed for life for taking more than $17 million in bribes.
Last year the former head of China's insurance regulator was sentenced to 11 years in prison, also on charges of taking bribes.
