Pineapple, you got it all wrong. I ended up in hospital in Thailand a few years ago. Total bill was $18,000, what with the private room and a la carte dining, the insurance paid every dime.

Of course all Insurance companies do settle claims or they would quickly go out of business. However it is very common practice in the sector to set claim denial targets as needed, to boost or maintain profit.
As always the devil is in the fine prints and most insurance contracts are written with a huge biais for the company by stating what is covered in big print while the multiple exclusions are vague and usually in the fine prints footing. Very few, usually mutual insurers (no shareholders but their clients as owners) will have contracts written the other way round (stating in big print all the contract exclusions. No need for fine print then, whatever isn’t listed must be covered.
