I visited the Crab market 2 weeks ago, and found the crabs to be quite small. Does any one else think the same ?

Yeah, a lot of effort for scant reward. I prefer my crab meat in a salad, baguette or on a pizza when I eat there.

Is over-fishing responsible for smaller size crabs and dwindling numbers ?
This is not new news, but it may be the answer to questions about why the crabs at Kep market are smaller and more expensive than they used to be.
- Among Khmers, Kep remains best known for its fresh crab, and on weekends hordes of locals descend to eat all the crab they can get their hands on. For Phnom Penh-based expats, Kep remains an ideal weekend getaway.

Kep may have to emphasise its other charms soon, however, as over-crabbing is decimating stocks and bad practices are destroying valuable coral and grass reefs that were forever in the making. These also provide the breeding grounds for the fish and crab that have become Kep’s economic lifeblood.
Ethical local restaurants now refuse to serve locally sourced crab — we’d advise you skip it too and go for a sustainable seafood option instead. (Go for goldband snapper, red snapper, calamari or tuna, our chef friend tells us.)

Well, you reap what you sow. If you sell small and pregnant crabs then what the fuck do you expect to eventually happen to your livelihood?

There have been "crab banks" started, whereby crabs are left in a cage to spawn and sold after, but it's not been enough. How hard would it be to have an official stopping the sale of pitifully small crabs? Paul Ferber's group have done some good things. I think they were placing large concrete blocks around to make it harder to trawl. Good luck to them.

been going to Kep since 2006 an the crabs each year get smaller while the demand from locals/tourists grows
the locals dont want wait till they get big or lay their eggs, cause the want the $$ today

Absolutely no doubt about those poor little immature shellfish. It is illegal in Maine restos and when caught they are fined and closed. Greed is its own worst enemy.
As my old Cajun bait seller used to say, "I opes you luck.

Visited the market this week and they had a big meeting with all the vendors and the police. I asked the Mrs and she said they were talking about being more fair and honest. The crabs were cheap $5 a kilo so can't really complain.

Still better to have them at twice the price and twice the size with them also having more meat in them.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

Yeah, they like to eat the eggs.

Same with fish. Eat everything that you catch, then wonder why you only catch small fish nowadays.
