Post by fax »

Hirisave Srikantaiah “HS” Manjunath passed away on Monday after an injuring himself in his hotel on a mission to cover the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon. He loved sport in every shape and form and worked as the chief sports writer for The Phnom Penh Post.

One of his favourite sayings was: “You need to a be good sport in all of your life. Even if you have lost, life is just like sport: handle failures in life like a good sportsman; in victory, don’t feel overjoyed either. Take everything in your stride.”

He is survived by two nieces in Bangalore, Ambika Mayasandra Gunurao and Aparna Mayasandra Gunurao.

RIP

As Chief Sports Writer for the Phnom Penh Post, could he be considered a public figure or a celebrity?

Good question, let's test the waters...

Lauded sports journalist by day...lushly mustachioed peddler of knock-off Rolex time-pieces by eve. RIP

While at the Angkor Wat International Half Marathon in Siem Reap, Manjunath slipped and fell in his hotel, breaking his ankle. Having had a recent history of heart problems and diabetes, the fractures put increased pressure on his weakened system and he later succumbed to the complications from the injury.

Well, the article says he was diabetic.

Diabetes increases the risk of plaque buildup in the arteries, which can cause dangerous blood clots. Nearly 80 percent of people who have diabetes will eventually die of clot-related causes.

Maybe the fall and/or ankle injury aggravated some existing plaque which lead to a pulmonary embolism, DVT, or stroke?

Among other things, “HS” Manjunath published many articles on Cambodian sports, and Cambodian sportsmen and women, often bringing little known subjects to the attention of expats and English language readers.
CEO News has reposted many of his articles here, hopefully spreading his message that sport in Cambodian is alive and well.

Condolences to his family and friends.

I'm hearing strange reports from a trustworthy source that they were having trouble getting Hirisave Srikantaiah's body out of the hospital because he didn't have a passport. Sounds like the hospital is saying they can't release the body for cremation because he hasn't had a passport for 8 or 9 years, if that makes any sense. Hard to believe the PPP would have him working there so long if he's never had a valid passport this long.
