Phnom Penh, Cambodia News: The Child Protection Unit (CPU)* were pleased to report today that the suspect Yang Yi was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Phnom Penh court on 4 December 2018 for the kidnap, rape and murder of 4-year-old Srey Chan, on 29 May this year.

How it happened:
The little girl, who is from a very poor home, went missing on the evening of 29 May, and her body was found some hours later, 20m from her home. Her body was taken to hospital, and the CPU were called in when it was established that the victim had been raped and suffocated. The immediate collection of forensic samples and detection of DNA by specialists provided vital evidence against a male suspect who was taken into custody in the early hours of the next day. Faced with the evidence, the suspect confessed, and later took part in a reenactment of his crime.

This sentence won't bring little Srey Chan back to life, but at least the murderer will spend the rest of his days in a Cambodian prison. According to a statement from the CPU Facebook page, a life sentence in Cambodia means what it says.
* The CPU (Child Protection Agency) is an NGO that works in conjunction with the Cambodian National Police to bring child abusers to justice. In this case, CPU crime scene technicians trained in the UK were able to furnish the evidence necessary to confound the suspect and to convince the court.
