Kandal Police Stop Chinese-Khmer Wedding
Kandal province, Cambodia News: According to the local police chief of Kien Svay district, at 10:30 am on December 2, 2018, the authorities received a report saying that there was a wedding ceremony taking place in Samrong village, Samrong Thom district, between a Chinese man and his ethnic Khmer bride.
However, the wedding was illegal because the couple did not get permission from the district authorities, so the police jumped in their cars and went to break it up.
As a result, the unhappy couple, YANG XIMING, a 30-year-old Chinese resident, and To Srey Cheat, 25 years old, a Cambodian from the village, were obliged to suspend their wedding celebration when the local police force rolled up and put an end to the festivities.
The authorities have now settled the case according to legal procedures.

Kandal authorities scupper illegal wedding
- Cap Visoth said the authorities stopped the wedding ceremony on Sunday morning because Mr Yang, as a foreign national, did not seek permission to marry the woman as required under Cambodian law.
He added that the wedding was also halted because the man did not seek permission from the local authority to hold the ceremony in Samrong Ka-aer village.
“The reason why we decided to stop the marriage was because it was illegal,” Cap Visoth said. “They did not have any permission from the Foreign Affairs or other relevant ministries for them to get married.”
“We also suspect that it was a fake marriage so that the Cambodian woman can be taken abroad to be trafficked,” he added.
Lieutenant Colonel Chea Yorn, provincial anti-human trafficking and juvenile protection department deputy chief, yesterday said that foreigners wishing to marry Cambodian women should seek written permission from the Foreign Affairs, Interior or Women’s Affairs ministries, and also provide proof that they are single, where they reside in their home countries and their financial situation.
He said that the foreigner should also submit copies of the ministry’s written permission to the provincial and district authorities and also state when and where the wedding ceremony is to take place at least one month in advance.
Lt Col Yorn noted that in previous years some foreigners have married Cambodian women from the province, who were later found to have been sold into prostitution abroad.
