Plugging in the classical chapey

During the week, 36-year-old Long Borarith throws on a suit and heads to his day job at the National Bank of Cambodia. On the weekends, though, he can be found in a dusty workshop near the CTN TV station, where he devotes his time to his passion – turning the chapey, Cambodia’s traditional two-stringed long-neck guitar, up to 11.

Yes, after more than a millennium in existence, the chapey has finally gone electric...

Chapei musician and singer Ouch Savy adds a modern touch to tradition.

August 24, 2018
Killing them softly with her voice
Ouch Savy is the female protégé of master chapei player Kong Nay. According to worldmusiccentral.org she is one of the new generation of chapei musicians “who are at the beginning of an emerging musical awareness that could come to rival imported karaoke and pop”.

But Savy has decided to come out of her comfort zone to collaborate with Haaland both in Cambodia and Norway.

Recalling her stint in Norway and performing with the full Ingolv Haaland and Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra on Norwegian state TV, she told the Meta House audience, “I want to put traditional and modern music together and want the world to know about Cambodia. I want to do something people haven’t heard before.”

Meanwhile, the biggest Chapei Dang Veng made from plastic bottles is being put on display at a pagoda in Siem Reap province to mark the two-year anniversary of the traditional Khmer guitar being recognised as an intangible cultural heritage by Unesco.

Riem Monisilong, an artist who made the plastic Chapei Dang Veng, said yesterday that he spent one month to complete it and it will be displayed at Wat Bo.He said 6,000 plastic bottles were used to make the guitar, most of them collected from hotels, as well as 16,000 plastic straws which he collected from coffee shops.

“The Chapei Dang Veng is 6.5 meters long,” he said. “It has already been brought to the pagoda where a show will be put on to mark the Unesco listing.”

Mr Monisilong added that he constructed the plastic guitar to raise awareness amongst the public over recycling.

“I hope that this Chapei Dang Veng will send a message to everyone to reduce using plastic and to manage rubbish properly,” he said.

The guitar is being displayed during the Chapei Dang Veng Festival, co-organised by the Cambodian Living Arts and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts at the Heritage Hub in Siem Reap province from November 30 to December 2.

Chapei celebration concert tomorrow (30 Nov.) in Kampong Speu:

Chapei concert marks fifth year of UNESCO listing

The Chapei Amatak Association (CAA) will present a group performance by musicians playing the chapei dang veng – the traditional Khmer two-stringed guitar – in Kampong Speu province on November 30 to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the instrument being placed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

CAA president Pech Sarath said on November 29 that the show, to be held in Thmey Chhongrouk village of Thpong district’s Ya Ang commune, will feature three generations of chapei dang veng players – including masters, journeymen and apprentices.

Sarath said that before the concert, which will start at 9am and run to 11am, there will be a folk game played called Chamroeun chapei dang veng and there are also volunteers from the Lakhon Khol Khmer Masked Theatre who will put on a traditional show as well.

Sarath said he had noted that young people in the modern era do not often meet to talk about the chapei dang veng or other ancient Khmer folk arts. Therefore, the concert is organised with three groups according to age and skill, because Khmer traditional arts will be in the hands of young people eventually and they must be instructed in these matters to prevent the traditions from dying.

“I encourage children to participate because they are the heirs and successors of the Khmer cultural heritage. If in the future we lose support, only the current youth and children learning these arts will be able to ensure they survive,” he said.

Sarath said the performance will include a song dedicated to the craftsman deity Preah Pisnukar (or Vishvakarma in Sanskrit). Another highlight would be when the elders and young people sing the Ladi Tra song together while all playing the chapei dang veng.

There will also be a display of 21 chapei dang vengs with some sized for children and others for women or men.

As the topic is Khmer musical instruments and the readers of this thread are presumable interested in such instruments, this may be of interest.

In 2002, I commissioned the building of a complete Pin Peat Traditional Cambodian Musical Ensemble in Phnom Penh by the then foremost traditional musical instrument maker in Cambodia, Mr Pin, and who probably now dead. Nonetheless, I believe his son continues the tradition and the business. These fine hand made instruments were commissioned for the Khmer Community of New South Wales (KC of NSW) centered upon the Bonnyrigg Temple in western Sydney.

For those interested in such matters, the 2002 prices for each hand built and dual script Khmer/English inscribed instrument was:

Roneat Dek US$240
Roneat Ek US$240
Roneat Thong US$240
Kong Touch US$420
Kong Thom US$480
Salay Ek US$72
Salay Nok US$360
Sko Thom US$360
Samphor US$240
Chhin US$42.

As all of these were newly made instruments, and not antiques, an export permit was immediately forthcoming, and they were sent air freight to Sydney where they were classified as cultural items and no tax or duties was applicable at that time.

I hope that the above information is of some interest and assistance to those interested in Cambodian cultural matters and the performing arts of Cambodia.

Preserving Cambodian Heritage: The Chapei Dang Veng Art Festival 2023
By Phillip Ken

Explore the traditions of Chapei Dang Veng at this year’s festival promoting culture and peace.

In a vibrant tribute to Cambodia’s rich cultural tapestry, the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts is poised to host the nationwide Chapei Dang Veng Art Festival 2023. This grand event, scheduled from October 2nd to 4th at the Department of Performing Arts Theatre, marks a resounding celebration of Cambodia’s arts, culture, and cherished traditions. Beyond its cultural significance, this festival promises to be a cornerstone for social development and national prestige.

Under the overarching theme of “Culture of Peace,” the 2023 Chapei Dang Veng Art Festival is a spirited homage to a Cambodian musical tradition that holds a special place in UNESCO’s Intangible Heritage of Humanity list since November 30, 2016. The festival is not only a platform to revel in the musical magic of Chapei Dang Veng but also a tribute to the resilience and tenacity of a tradition that has etched itself in the cultural identity of Cambodia. At the heart of this celebration lies the iconic Chapei Dang Veng, a two-stringed, long-necked guitar, accompanied by soul-stirring vocals.

Recognized by UNESCO as a pivotal cultural element of Cambodia, it embodies the essence of the nation’s social and cultural mosaic. The festival’s primary aim is to showcase how Chapei Dang Veng has been an instrumental force in preserving Cambodia’s cultural essence and cherished values.

This is not just music for entertainment; it’s a tapestry of traditions, safeguarding rituals, imparting cultural wisdom, and fostering unity. Traditionally, the custodians of this art were predominantly male. However, today, there are no gender bounds – anyone with a passion for the Chapei can embrace this heritage. Passed down through the generations orally and via informal mentorship, the tradition survives, albeit with a select few performers and even fewer masters. The scars of the Khmer Rouge era still echo in the dwindling numbers, signifying the need to safeguard this tradition for future generations.

The spotlight also falls on the stalwarts who have kept the flame of Chapei Dang Veng alive. Names like Pirum Kram Ngoy, Pirum Prach Choun, Louk Ta Changkum Brambey, Louk Ta Kampoul Pech, and Master Kong Nay resonate through the annals of this art form. Their contributions serve as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of Chapei Dang Veng.
