Boat ready to vie for record
8 November 2018
A boat built by The Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia is ready for evaluation by representatives of the Guinness Book of World Records on November 12, the group said yesterday.
Sar Sokha, president of UYFC for Prey Veng province, said yesterday that the long boat cost about $60,000 and took seven months to build in the province’s Peam Ror district.
“Construction of the boat is now 100 percent complete,” he said. “It is a proud day for Khmer people that they can build a boat which could set a Guinness world record.”
“We expect more than 14,000 people to attend this special ceremony on November 12,” Mr Sokha added.
According to the boat building committee, a Guinness World Records representative will assess the size of the boat and its performance before announcing the results of the evaluation at the end of the ceremony in the district’s Praek Ksay K commune.
Work on the boat, which is 87.3 meters long and 1.99 meters wide and can accommodate 179 people, started in April.
Mr Sokha said that after the event, the boat will be exhibited at the Water Festival in Phnom Penh and be there for about ten days before returning to be kept at Prey Veng Provincial Hall.
“We plan to put the boat on show for the Water Festival in Phnom Penh for people from all over the country and international visitors to see,” he said.
