where to get HIV viral load test?

Post by rasputin »

I'm in Siem Reap right now. I can go to Phnom Penh or Bangkok. The needle stick happened in Bangkok about a week ago.
I want to get the viral load test right away because that will provide evidence of the time of infection.

How soon can I take an HIV test?

This usually requires waiting 3 to 4 weeks before taking an antibody-based test (see Figure 6). UK guidelines state that 4th generation HIV tests (antigen/antibody) will detect 95% of infections four weeks after exposure.

A negative test after four weeks then needs to be confirmed with a second test three months after the risk. This is in case you take longer than four weeks to generate an antibody response.

In high risk exposures, especially if symptoms occur, viral load testing is sometimes used after one week. This includes after a sexual assault or after a needlestick injury to a healthcare worker. http://i-base.info/guides/testing/how-s ... ake-a-test

The Pasteur Institute in PP offers free HIV testing.

Years ago I heard about some type of emergency treatment in case you think you have been exposed. Since I know so little about it I can't comment on its usefulness . I think this is it.

The odds of getting HIV from a needle stick are 1 in 300, assuming that the needle was even HIV infected. The odds of getting HIV from a random needle of unknown origin are of course much lower.

this issue actually comes up in hotel casino lawsuits. Guest A checks out of the room and leaves a needle under the bed, in the carpet, between the mattress and boxspring, etc.

Guest B later checks int the room and sticks himself with the needle.

Guest B argues that the maids should have found the needle and asks for a shitload of money based on "fear of AIDS." Hotel-casino argues that since Guest B didn't get AIDS, his damages are limited to the cost of band aid for the needle stick, and that there should be no recovery for fear of diseases that the guest didn't actually catch.

Anyway there's a whole body of law on "needle stick fear of disease" cases because any restaurant, shop, school, movie theater, bathroom, etc. is a place that a dumbass can leave an exposed needle lying around.

I also recall a case against the Rio hotel casino years ago where a guest checked out, left used condom under bed, maids didn't see it, next guest checked in with an infant who supposedly crawled under the bed and put the condom in his mouth. Which is pretty gay, if you ask me.

As a first step, I'd go to Siem Reap Referral Hospital HIV unit and see what they advise.

Good points there Cam. But how about if it wasn't just stepping on an old discarded syringe - it was some HIV positive junkie stuck a syringe full of infected blood into someone and injected it? That would be a bit more of a risk?
