All you need to know about Cambodia’s Water Festival, from its history to the colourful boat races that attract more than a million people
22 October 2018
Also known as Bon Om Touk, the annual event is one of the country’s biggest celebrations drawing more than one million Cambodians from the provinces to the capital for three days of boat racing and other festivities.

Welcome to Cambodia’s Water Festival, or Bon Om Touk. The annual event, which takes place this year from November 21 to 23, is one of the country’s most treasured celebrations and draws more than one million Cambodians from the provinces to the capital for three days of festivities.

Also referred to as the Sun and Moon Festival, Bon Om Touk coincides with the full moon of the Buddhist month of Katdeuk. Heralding the end of the monsoon season and ringing in a new season of healthy crops and fish, the Water Festival is a time for serious celebration.

Nyom Jamie,

It's actually the end of the Vassa (rain retreat), the first. On this day the Buddha gave the "Anapanasati-Sutta", Mindfulness on breathing, encouraging also to four month retreat. In instructed areas (only very less Monastery communities even know it) of Dhamma this day is known as Anapanasati-Day (Buddhist Pūjās/devotional days-list)

As for the folk-tradition (total opposite the Buddha Dhamma, encouraging to lose mind), it's propably adapted from the Siam King or viciversa: Here the start of a nice to read and teaching Legend:
Legends of Somdet Toh

...Another time, Rama IV felt that since Thailand had been laid waste by the Burmese, many ancient Thai customs had disappeared, so new customs should be developed to replace them. So he decided, "Wouldn't it be nice if we had a boat parade at the end of the rains retreat? Every monastery in Bangkok will be responsible for decorating a boat, and we'll have a contest to reward the best-looking boat." So the royal decree went out that every monastery in Bangkok had to decorate a boat for the parade....
The time marks also the season where the Tonle Sap River slowly starts to flow south/sea-wardly again and of course it's also related to the farming season.
Another deep cultural aspect of this day(s), since actually the most opposite to consuming, is the tradition of, familar known in Cambodia as, Ponn Ak Ambok, Sompeah Breah Kay, "Puñña indulge in eating tamped (rice)", "devotion toward the Sublim moon (rabbit)" following the Jataka Story 316, Sasapaṇḍitajātakaṃ
...A certain landowner at Sāvatthi, they say, provided all the requisites for the Brotherhood with Buddha at its head, and setting up a pavilion at his house door, he invited all the °° company of priests with their chief Buddha, seated them on elegant seats prepared for them, and offered them a variety of choice and dainty food. And saying, "Come again to-morrow," he entertained them for a whole week, and on the seventh day he presented Buddha and the five hundred priests under him with all the requisites. At the end of the feast the Master, in returning thanks, said, "Lay Brother, you are right in giving pleasure and satisfaction by this charity. For this is a tradition of wise men of old, who sacrificed their lives for any beggars they met with, and gave them even their own flesh to eat." And at the request of his host he related this old-world legend...: Once upon a time when Brahmadatta was reigning in Benares, the Bodhisatta came to life as a young hare and lived in a wood ...
May simply thought of skilfully deeds in advanced already pattern a blessed road to praiseworthy actions and your own earned blessed destiny here and after.

Nonsense, the Cambodian Water Festival has been celebrated since the 12th century, before Siam or even Attathuya existed.

Althought not brother, stories are stories... but this one has a wise message behind, not intent for gain: "folk events are one thing, religious, 'holly' another: wise, one should not mix each other", and sometimes a monkey can explain such. Would one not for the most feel insulted when asked where is the origin from and one would answer: pride, conceit and wish for gain?

Let's face it, you had no idea what you were talking about so picked on some recent Thai explanation. I don't believe you have any understanding of regional history as you are caught up in higher concerns. It's highly insulting to Cambodia to attribute the nation's customs to neighboring countries which didn't exist at the time those customs were recorded in stone. You come off as extremely conceited yourself, that's not quite what you were aiming at though, was it?

Thank you O’Mosf revered resident Scrooge of CEO. Your words must be so close to gospel that others cannot see the light of your truth.
