What they are saying about the two teams. [Note that the Cambodian fans get a special mention.]

Malaysia
Form: The exploits of the under-23 team this year have been a very welcome piece of good news that has helped lift some of the gloom in Malaysian football. There have been signs of progression under manager Tan Cheng Hoe, but November's tournament is a major test.

Coach: Tan Cheng Hoe. Thoughtful and studious, Tan is well-liked by the players but that won't stop the criticism at home if results are poor.

Key man: Safawi Rasid. The 21-year-old has already proved to be one of the most exciting young talents in the region and, while it is unfair to place too much pressure on the shoulders of this young winger, he has that bit of something different that Malaysia have been lacking.

Prospects: The opening game in Cambodia is crucial. A repeat of the recent friendly win in Phnom Penh would get Malaysia's self-belief going and would also give the team a great chance of the last four.

Cambodia
Form: The Angkor Warriors have lost most of their friendlies of late but the team are usually competitive.

Coach: That's an unusually tough question. In September's friendly with Malaysia, it was Keisuke Honda (unofficially) calling the shots but the Japanese star is busy with Melbourne Victory in Australia. Argentine Felix Gonzalez will take the reins for the AFF Cup.

Key man: Chan Vathanaka. The attacker known as CR11 lost his way a little with an ill-fated move to Japan in 2017, but the 24-year-old started in the last edition of the AFF Cup and still has what it takes to shine on the regional stage.

Prospects: Cambodia have improved since being regional whipping boys, even if there has been something of a plateau in the past year or two. Picking up a few points and being competitive will be enough -- and that will be helped by some of the most passionate home fans in Asia.

Cambodia readies for Suzuki Cup, Honda absent
The Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup, the region’s premier festival of football, gets underway tonight with Cambodia hosting Malaysia for a tasty competition opener which is sure to captivate fans at Phnom Penh’s Olympic Stadium.

Felix Gonzalez Dalmas, head coach of the national football team, speaking at yesterday’s press conference here in Phnom Penh, said that his team had been making good progress and were learning how the new coaching team expected them to play.

Dalmas said he learned a lot from the clash with Malaysia in their international friendly encounter last September, and he expected the team to be able to not repeat mistakes.

“It was a good game and we lost, he said of their September defeat to the Malaysians “But we learned a lot from the game. We saw our mistake and we tried to fix them,” he said.

Cambodia hoping for Keisuke Honda's presence after Malaysia clash

Fans expecting to see Japanese star Keisuke Honda on the Cambodia bench again when they open their 2018 AFF Championship campaign, against Malaysia, will be disappointed to know that he will not be in Phnom Penh on Thursday.

The Angkor Warriors manager, who at the same time is still playing club football for Melbourne Victory in the A-League, has been playing an instrumental role for the club, and is expected to line-up for Victory next weekend.

In addition to this, the Japanese does not have the necessary coaching badges required to lead a national team as its head coach.

Instead, Argentinian head coach Félix González will lead Cambodia when they face Malaysia.

Only last September, Honda led Cambodia against Malaysia in a friendly match at the Cambodian Olympic Stadium, their first game since the pair's appointment. The match ended in a 3-1 win to the Harimau Malaya.

Speaking in the press conference on Wednesday, the 30-year old trainer explained Honda's absence.

"No, he won't be here for this particular game. But he's still communicating with us, he still joins our meetings and knows what's going on. It's different not having him for sure, but I don't think it will affect our chances.

"Hopefully he'll get to join us in the later games in the group stage," he said.

Last night' s other Group A match:

08 Nov 2018
REPORT: Laos 0-3 Vietnam

Vientiane: Vietnam proved their title credentials with a comprehensive and convincing 3-0 win over Laos in their 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup opener on Thursday.

Looking for their first AFF Suzuki Cup title since 2008, and just their second overall, Park Hang-seo’s side wasted little time asserting their control over the home side.

Luong Xuan Truong fired a warning shot from distance after just six minutes, and just five minutes later the visitors took the lead.

Nguyen Cong Phuong won the ball back on the touchline and played the ball to Doan Van Hau out wide. The defender whipped the ball into the box, and after the Laos defence failed to clear their lines, the ball was set up for Nguyen Cong Phuong to smash it home from just inside the area.

The visitors continued their dominance throughout the first half but they’d have to wait until the stroke of half time to extend their lead.

After failing to test the goalkeeper from distance early in the first half, Luong Xuan Truong forced Saymanolinh Paseuth into a fine save that rebounded off the crossbar into the path of Nguyen Anh Duc who made no mistake from close range to make it 2-0 to Vietnam at half time.

One of the standouts for Vietnam, Nguyen Quang Hai, forced another fine save from Saymanolinh early in the second half but he wouldn’t be denied second time around, with a beautiful curling free kick getting past the Laos custodian on 68 minutes to make it 3-0 for Vietnam.
