Tong tin leader arrested after fleeing with $350,000

Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Saturday charged a tong tin leader for allegedly cheating hundreds of people out of about $350,000 in Por Senchey district.

Lieutenant Colonel Yim Sarann, district police chief, identified the accused as Chheng Sara, a drinks vendor in the district.

Lt Col Sarann said Ms Sara was accused of breach of trust and could face up to three years in prison if convicted. He noted that Ms Sara was arrested following a complaint filed by 485 people.

Lieutenant Van Sokkosal, a police officer with Chom Chao II commune police, said Ms Sara was responsible for collecting and accounting for money from members in her tong tin scheme.

Lt Sokkosal said that last year, about 300 members paid a monthly fee that accumulated to about $150,000. He added that by the end of last year, the number of her members swelled to 485 after she garnered their trust.

Each month, she collected up to $350,000 from her members, Lt Sokkosal said. He added that in May, Ms Sara disappeared after collecting about $350,000 from her members.
