28 September 2017
Verdict: Toby Nelhams has been found guilty of fraud, but all charges concerning immigration have been dropped. No mention of extradition to Thailand, or even deportation. He was arrested and has been in detention since Feburary 2017.

Cambodian court convicts British murder suspect of fraud
PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) -- A Cambodian court on Thursday sentenced a British man suspected of involvement in the gangland-style slaying of another Briton in the Thai resort town of Pattaya to eight months in prison for fraud.

Toby James Nelhams was one of three men sought by Thai police in the Jan. 24 shooting death of Tony Kenway as he sat in his parked Porsche SUV. Thai media reported that Kenway's widow described him as a website designer, but that police linked him to a gambling website, among other activities, and that the suspects were allegedly involved with financial crimes.

Phnom Penh Municipal Court found Nelhams guilty of fraud but dropped charges of entering Cambodia illegally, working without a passport or work permit. It's unclear if Thailand ever formally sought his extradition.

Thai police have said the two other suspects, a South African suspected of being the shooter and a Briton believed to have been his getaway driver, fled to Cambodia. Their current whereabouts are unknown. Nelhams was suspected of having masterminded the killing.

ThaiVisa reports that Toby Nelhams was released from Cambodia's Prey Sar Prison back in October:

"Two sources in Cambodia, independent of each other, both of whom are familiar with the case have said that Nelhams was released from Prey Sar in October 2017, although Thaivisa has been unable to officially confirm this.

South African Abel Bonito Caldeira is wanted for carrying out the shooting, while British born Miles Dicken Turner is believed to have driven the getaway motorbike, with Toby James Nelhams alleged to have been the mastermind behind the murder."

Video of the assassination of Tony Kenway:

"Life is too important to take seriously."

"Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh."

Andrew Drummond also reporting that Nelhams was quietly released shortly after being sentenced to eight months in prison. Speculation is that he bought his way out.

Toby Nelhams has been arrested entering Spain at Malaga airport.

Spanish police arrest a convicted British fraudster, 45, wanted in Thailand over the murder of another expat

Spanish police have arrested a convicted British fraudster wanted by authorities in Thailand over the murder of another expat.

Detectives held Toby James Nelhams, 45, on an international arrest warrant as he landed at Malaga Airport.

National Police based in Malaga said the warrant had been issued because authorities in Thailand suspected Nelhams, from Islington, north London, had ordered the murder of a fellow British expat described as the kingpin of a 'Wolf of Wall Street'-style boiler room gang operation.

Nelhams has previously been linked to the murder of Brit fraudster Tony Kenway although he has never been prosecuted.

The 39-year-old was blasted in the head in a gangland-style hit as he sat in his red Porsche in Pattaya, south Thailand, in January last year.

Dad-of-four Kenway, who boasted about his lavish lifestyle on social media, raked in millions running his own fraud operation targeting savers in the UK and Australia.

Nelhams - one of three men sought over the 24 January 2017 shooting of Mr Kenway, originally from Southampton - was arrested in February last year but was never put on trial.

The other two suspects were identified as a Brit believed to be the getaway driver, named as 28-year-old Miles Dicken Turner from Oxford, and alleged gunman Abel Candeira Bonito, 24, from South Africa. Their current whereabouts are unknown.

A spokesman for National Police in Malaga said: 'National Police have held a British man aged 45 on an international arrest warrant at Malaga Airport.

'The warrant had been issued by authorities in Thailand who suspect him of ordering the murder of a compatriot.
'The fugitive, whose initials are TJN and was born in Islington, was caught when he tried to enter Spain through Malaga Airport.
