Happy Football Cambodia Australia and the Homeless World Cup

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

This is really inspiring stuff. The next Homeless World Cup tournament will be held in Mexico in November 2018, and CEONews will be following and supporting the Cambodian team. Go guys! The girls team is still in the making, but hope to be ready to compete in 2019.

Whether in a real football pitch or in mere empty streets, Cambodia has an abundance of talented young football players. But not everyone gets the chance to be recognised and play for established local clubs, especially if they’re poor. This drove Paraic Grogran to establish the Happy Football Cambodia Australia and offer underprivileged kids an opportunity to train professionally and compete internationally.

Shame on Mexico.

Cambodia Retires from Homeless Cup due to Mexican Visa Hassles.
24 October 2018
appy Football Cambodia Australia (HFCA), which has been associated with Cambodia’s Homeless World Cup campaigns for nearly a decade, on Tuesday announced the withdrawal of the Kingdom’s squad from the 2018 edition to be held in Mexico City from November 13-18 due to visa concerns for the team members.

According to HFCA, the difficult decision was made due to serious doubts about obtaining visas despite determined efforts over months to accommodate eight young Cambodians, who had never travelled outside the Kingdom before.

“We are disappointed by the lack of assistance received from Mexican officials, after six months of negotiations, in obtaining visas for our players to attend the Homeless World Cup – an event that prides itself on inclusiveness and fair opportunities for all,” HFCA CEO Paraic Grogan said.

“As can be expected, our players are very upset that they will be unable to represent their country next month in Mexico, but we will do all we can to ensure they have the opportunity to compete in Wales, at the 2019 tournament. This is very disappointing."

A new chance for the stars of the association Happy Football Cambodia Australia, who will be able to compete in the Homeless World Cup this year in Bute Park, Cardiff, Wales, after a shameful visa fiasco by the Mexican authorities last year, which meant the team had to withdraw from the Cup. This year the team are being warmly welcomed by the British.

The competition is being held from 27 July- 3 August 2019, and CEO will be following the Cambodian team with interest and cheering them on. All the best to the team. :Bravo:

What is... the Homeless World Cup ?
Image

The Homeless World Cup is an annual football tournament organized by the Homeless World Cup Foundation, a social organization which advocates the end of homelessness through the sport of association football. The organization puts together an annual football tournament where teams of homeless people from each country compete.
Founded in 2001, the Homeless World Cup is an international football competition that brings together 50 plus nations every single year. Played over ten days on three pitches, the teams consist of four players on the pitch at any given time with four substitutes. The pitches are small and surrounded by walls so the ball is constantly in play and its action packed with goals galore.
This year, starting 27 July 2019, in Wales in the UK !

Michael Sheen: Why I’m backing Cardiff’s Homeless World Cup
Hollywood actor hopes tournament can help highlight poverty in Wales
Sat 13 Jul 2019 13.20 BST
Michael Sheen, star of Good Omens and Masters of Sex, is this weekend preparing for his next, possibly most challenging, role. But his latest production will play out on football pitches in Cardiff, not on TV screens.

The award-winning Welsh actor led a successful bid for Wales to host the 17th Homeless World Cup this year and is now working full time on the staging of the tournament.

“We’re just a fortnight off now and a real momentum is building. I went along to look at the Welsh teams playing yesterday,” he said.

The Homeless World Cup, which will bring 500 players from 50 countries to Wales, will run for a week in Cardiff’s Bute Park from 27 July. With the aim of changing attitudes to homelessness in Cardiff as well as providing fresh employment opportunities, the tournament has invited players from all over the world who have either been homeless or are selling street newspapers, are in recovery from drug or alcohol dependency or are asylum seekers.

Sheen told the Observer he was ready to be criticised for being “a champagne socialist” who campaigns on social issues, as long as he can still make a practical difference.

“If I’m scrutinised, then I think that’s right,” he said. “There’s a level of scrutiny you come under as a politician, and luckily I don’t get that. But if someone’s setting out to do what I do, as an activist, scrutiny is actually the right thing. I don’t really mind what people say about me. If people are critical of my motives or call me a champagne socialist or something like that, it doesn’t matter.”

Sheen, from Port Talbot, said he had become “frustrated” with simply signing up to causes as a star name. Three years ago he returned to Wales from his former home in America to try to make a practical difference.

“I now split my time between Wales, in London and in America, as I was dissatisfied. I felt I was a bit of a sham,” he said. “Although it does help to a degree to have an actor’s name attached to something, I wanted to be more involved.”

Sheen, 50, said homelessness had been “a live issue” in the Welsh capital for a year or so. “You go down the high street and you see people in tents. And there’s been controversy about how the authorities have handled it.” “The difficulties surrounding the rolling out of universal credit and the arrival of the food banks mean it is very much on people’s minds.”

When it comes to the morality of giving money to street beggars and homeless people, the actor argues there is no correct answer. “If you as a private citizen want to give money to someone else, what I’d suggest is you also talk to them. It might even be more beneficial. Not just to walk by. If you decide not to give money because you’re worried they may spend it in a way you don’t think is wise, for whatever reason, then fine. But when you go home, perhaps think about supporting a charity or finding out more about the situation, rather than just blocking it out of your mind.”

‘An amazing experience’ – Football’s Homeless World Cup
By Tim Hartley on July 16, 2019
The flags are up across the Welsh capital, Cardiff, in anticipation of the Homeless World Cup which kicks off on 27 July.

In his third preview of the tournament Tim Hartley looks at the difference playing in a competition like this makes for men and women who have been homeless or who are getting over addiction.

We are used in our capital city to waving the flag. It’s usually the Welsh dragon during European rugby’s six nations championships. The pedestrianised St Mary’s Street with its bars and restaurants is festooned with banners whipping up expectation of the heroics to come. But Wales has also hosted soccer’s FA and League Cup finals, the UEFA Champions League final, Wales’ home soccer matches and a host of other sporting events. The city council loves to get the flags out and as teams from 50 countries hold their final training sessions the welcome for the Homeless World Cup will be no different.

I went down to the Civil Service ground in Newport to meet Keri Harris, the squad manager for the Wales men’s and women’s teams. He was at the first World Cup in Graz in 2003, has managed the Wales squads since then and now runs Street Football Wales. He knows the power of the game to change lives. ‘I remember one of my team back then at the first World Cup was an agoraphobic lad. Just being there was a really big thing for him. We got him to carry the flag in the opening parade. I saw him change before my eyes.’

Another player Kerri has helped to get his life back on track is Wayne. ‘I’ve come from a situation where I had almost given up on life,’ said Wayne who was released from prison in 2013. Two years later he met Kerri who gave him the opportunity to play in the finals in Amsterdam. ‘The Homeless World Cup is such an amazing experience,’ said Wayne. ‘There’s food, music, fun. There’s laughter. There’s representatives from the rest of the world. The flair on the pitch is phenomenal.’

In a sense though it is what happens off the pitch, what happens to the men and women playing the game, which really matters. Wayne knows this only too well. ‘For people experiencing homelessness or substance abuse for such a long time,’ he said. ‘Well, they’ve been excluded from society and they have no connection with human beings. They come along and to be part of something like, that’s real, it makes them human. For me it definitely made me feel worthy. My self-worth used to be on the floor but since becoming a player, putting this badge on, I believe I’m worth something.’ Wayne is now helping other vulnerable people by helping to coach the homeless teams.

Kingdom’s homeless football team bid for glory
After securing all travel permits and visas, Cambodia’s team of eight football players will leave for Britain next week where they will represent the kingdom at the Homeless World Cup – an annual football tournament that aims to energise underprivileged people to change their own lives.

“All the squad, players and staff were delighted when Dam Sam got his UK travel visa yesterday, Paraic Grogan told Khmer Times yesterday. “Now all the Cambodian team will go to Britain to represent the Kingdom with pride.

“All eight players and the coaching staff are working so hard to achieve their goals. To bring home a trophy. To show the world the special unique nature of Cambodian culture and to learn the Welsh language so as to better understand their hosts and be good ambassadors for their homeland,” added. Mr. Grogan, who founded HFCA in 2005 and now runs the organisation.

Homeless World Cup Set To Kick Off In Cardiff, Wales, Tomorrow

Homeless World Cup
The Homeless World Cup is a unique, pioneering social movement which uses football to inspire homeless people to change their own lives. For more details, read Mel Young’s new book, Home Game.

We envision a world where anyone and everyone who is or becomes homeless can gain access to one of our National Partners’ transformative programmes. Our mission is to inspire homeless people to change their lives through the power of football.

We operate through a network of more than 75 national partners to support football programmes and social enterprise development. We provide a focus for – and celebration of – their year-round activity by organising and delivering an annual, world-class, international football tournament for national teams of homeless men and women.

Homelessness can force people into isolation, which affects their ability to share, communicate their thoughts, and work with others.

When a homeless person gets involved in football, they build relationships; they become teammates who learn to trust and share. They have a responsibility to attend training sessions and games, to be on time, and to be prepared to participate. They feel that they are part of something larger than themselves.

The sense of empowerment that comes from participating in street football helps homeless people see that they can change their lives; and our National Partner organisations give them the tools they need to do just that.

A survey of Homeless World Cup players showed that:

94% say the Homeless World Cup positively impacted their lives;
83% improved social relations with family and friends;
77% changed their lives significantly because of their involvement with football; and
71% continue to play the sport.

The players at the tournament are the tip of the iceberg, individuals whose efforts and dedication to National Partner programmes—and to changing their lives—have earned them the opportunity of a lifetime. The reach of the Homeless World Cup extends much farther than the 500 players who attend the annual event. The Homeless World Cup movement includes:

74 National Partners
Working in 450+ locations
With 100,000+ homeless people involved every year

The Homeless World Cup has impacted the lives of more than one million homeless people around the globe since our founding more than a decade ago.
