Can you recommend a Khmer language tutor?

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Can you recommend a Khmer language tutor?

Post by StroppyChops »

Mrs Stroppy and I want formal Khmer language tutoring at home, an hour a day, 5 days a week, for at least a few months. I will pay $6 per session for a good tutor who can speak conversational English. I am looking for first-hand recommendations from expats please.

The best I've had is a college graduate that spoke excellent English and was good at explaining rules, etc.

I used to work with him at a tutoring agency. You can name drop if you want.

His name is Soma.

I paid $5 an hour, but that was because I paid a month up front through our agency.

I'll PM you his number right now.

First lesson last night, starting out with an hour a day, five days a week, at least four months. The tutor has us learning the alphabet, starting with consonants.

We learned the first five last night and discovered that Khmer does indeed have some tonality, despite what other texts might say. We're also learning to read and write Khmer, and I have not felt this physically retarded in a long, long time. Small children would laugh, and possibly throw rocks.

One interesting aspect is that our tutor days "the sound is x, like in..." and points to a picture of a frog - no connection that we don't know the Khmer word for frog yet! As the Khmer alphabet has over 60 characters, there are sounds our English speaking mouths have never encountered before.

Heck of a challenge, but while it stays fun it should be good.
