In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
Re: Anyone remmemner david the letcher from the up/down bar
That is quite an "enemies list". Serious persecution syndrome. I guess he is represented by the gallant crusader in his bizarre photoshop image there? Apparently, his anger and his dreams of some sort of revenge are all he has to hold onto at this point. He will most probably die in prison. What sort of "war" he envisions waging from prison will be interesting...more to gage his descent into insanity than anything else.
I don't know this Fletcher guy and have only read what has been printed about him online (not one bit of which has been in his defense), so I'll leave it up to those more familiar with his exploits to comment.

I knew him and used to go to the dump often with the group in 2008,

Not wanting to defend him or anything BUT he was passing out food when no one else would and XX, did basic medial checkups for free for the kids
it did go downhill in late 2008when things got a bit dodgy , for want of a better word.

Well, handing out food is one thing. Handing out food as a cover to gain access to and abuse children destroys any possible good he might have done...and that seems to be the wrap against him. Is that assessment of his behavior at the dump not correct? If so, that is way past "dodgy". That crosses over into "evil", IMO.phuketrichard wrote:I knew him and used to go to the dump often with the group in 2008,

Can someone accurately sum up the charges against him that got him locked up? Not the UK stuff, but his Cambodian charges only.

Re: Anyone remmember David Fletcher from Bogie and Bacall b
i would say he was grooming the girls. We all an the tourist that would go with us on the dump trip truly were doing something good but he ( i believe ) had a 2nd agenda
basic charge against him was he attempted to "Buy"/marry one of the young girls that lived at the dump ( i think she was like 15) .
He did give her mother $$ and a ring and than the story went in different directions;
the ngo's got a hold of her and told to say he raped her (or admit he did and it was not a marriage) and her mother did sell her
he says he did not "buy" her but gave her mother money to marry her and to help with her other kids.
The truth is somewhere in between
I saw things that involved him that made me and others very uncomfortable and we often would confront him in his bar about them but he shrugged them off, same goes with some of the money that was raised to buy food for the kids that did not make it out of the bar

I was under the impression the teenager involved was seventeen. Not a crime in his home country nor Cambodia provided the sex was consensual.
I didn't follow the story because I didn't know the guy but the charge to me seems like a stitch up. That said, there was a disturbing picture going around of him (I think in the Phnom Penh post) with his arms wrapped around a preteen dump girl.
Who really knows. Before full judgement is made on his guilt or innocence a transparent trial in his home country judged by his peers would be in order.

I don't know much at all about this story although many of the names and backstories are familiar - an (unbiased?) summary would be greatly appreciated from anyone better in the know?
One thing I have learned, though, is how quickly reputations are shredded in this city, and used as cannon fodder either for those trying to gain a greater share of the sponsorship trough or hide their own sins. I've also learned to despise the moral outragers (usually in the guise of an NGO volunteer and wearing elephant pants). Mrs Stroppy and I are working hard to befriend the entire community of construction workers that are building an apartment block directly across from us - it looks like several family groups plus extras. We pass our empty drink cans, Mrs Stroppy gives the toddlers a lolly on the way past, and once in a while we've bought a large bottle of drink for them to share if it's especially hot. The older youth tend to flick the feathers (laing sei) my way in the evenings to see if I'll play kick the bird with them.
The teen girls in the group have made a game out of calling me 'grandfather', possibly because of the beard, and giggle when they do it. Very cute, but also an apparent red flag to the self righteous indignationists that frequent the NGO restaurant in this street. I actually had a couple of NGOers who live in the building ask me if I know what the girls are saying, and when I confirmed that I know what they call me, the NGOers demanded an explanation of why they do it. "It's okay, my wife and I know them" was apparently the most wrong answer that could have been given. No doubt I'm now under scrutiny from the grassy knoll of the moral highground - whereas I'd like to know (actually, I don't) where these expats go when they sneak off in the dark at night.
Incidentally, the teen boys in the group call me 'teacher' and everyone else calls me 'bong'. The tuktuk drivers who park here, the NGO restaurant staff, the guys that garage our vehicles, the landlord and his entire extended family, and the Khmer neighbours call me 'brother', which is appropriate in a village setting, in my view.
