Kampong Thom: Mr. Chuon Taing, from Soc Son Veal Village, Stoeng Sen, Kampong Thom Province, has been a rat-catcher for the past six years. He and his family work at rat-catching all year round, but the best time of year for business is the wet season. When the rains come, the flooding chases the rats from the bush, where they hide out in the dry season, far from the village.

Some days, depending on the weather, he can earn between 70,000 and 100,000 riel a time, just by using old-fashioned traps and baiting pits with rice. He said that these bush rats are very popular with the Vietnamese, and that there is a good market selling to Vietnamese restaurants.
