Honda endures difficult start to Cambodia role
11 September 2018
Melbourne Victory marquee Keisuke Honda has been unable to sprinkle his stardust on Cambodia just yet with the country losing 3-1 in a friendly meeting with Malaysia on Monday.

Honda, 32, was appointed General Manager in August and got to work during the international break.

It looked as though the Japan legend would enjoy a winning start to the new role when Soeuy Visal delighted around 40,000 fans with a first-half opener.

But the visitors fought back to net three times after the interval and leave Cambodia with some thinking to do ahead of November's AFF Suzuki Cup matches.

Keisuke Honda has been criticized for coaching the Cambodia football team by Brad Adams from Human Rights Watch.

Cambodian Football Fans Blatantly React to Human Rights Watch Brad Adams for Linking Football to Politics
19/12/18 21:26
Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 19 – Cambodian football journalists, coaches, and fans have strongly reacted to Brad Adams, executive director of Human Rights Watch (HRW)'s Asia Division, for linking football sport to politics, which is a serious violation to FIFA's regulations.

Coaches and fans urged Brad to study the law clearly to avoid being mistaken, which also affected sport sector and international law.

“It is a complete mistake of HRW to link Honda to General Sokha on behalf of President of Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC),” Prak Sovannara, former coach of Cambodian national team, stated.
“Recognized by FIFA, Honda, an internal footballer, and President of FFA Gen. Sokha are not related to politics,” he added.

In the Radio Free Asia’s recent report entitled “HRW slams Japanese football star for working with Red-hand Official” released on 18 December, HRW said Keisuke Honda is now "linked" with the president of the FFC General Sao Sokha.

"Sao Sokha has admitted to playing a key role in HE's bloody 1997 coup d'etat as the Commander of the Royal Khmer Gendarmerie," HRW said in a letter to Honda.

Keisuke Honda is a Japanese professional footballer who plays for Australian club Melbourne Victory and also general manager and coach of the Cambodia national team, who was appointed late August.

Cambodia football 2018 Review – Honda engine fails to lift gloom over the Angkor Warriors

In 2018, the Cambodian football seemed to be no different from previous years! They played a lot of matches, won a few and lost a whole lot of them. And despite some little changes here and there, there still doesn’t seem to be light at the end of the tunnel for the Beautiful Game in Cambodia.

The National Team
The Football Federation of Cambodia (FFC) have changed two coaches in 2018. Prakan Sovannara was the coach of the Angkor Warriors after Leonardo Vitorino parted ways back in October 2017. During his stint, he guided the U21 national team to the final of the Sixth Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy U21 football competition in Brunei where they lost to Timor-Leste in the final.

In August 2018, the FFC appointed former Japan international Keisuke Honda along with Argentine coach Felix Dalmás as his assistant. Honda, despite having an envious track record as a player, is yet to have an impact on the national team and is juggling between his career as a professional player for A-League’s Melbourne Victory.

The national team relinquishes at 172nd portion in the latest FIFA World Rankings and taking into consideration the recent track record, they are bound to continue there for a while, as well.

Keisuke Honda risks cheapening legacy
by Dan Orlowitz
Oct 2, 2019
Even in the prime of Keisuke Honda’s career, there have been few in the Japanese soccer community who could claim to have a good understanding of what was going on in the mind of the enigmatic midfielder.

After a series of increasingly erratic tweets in the last week, that number may be down to one: Honda himself.

The former Samurai Blue star, who has been without a club since leaving Australia’s Melbourne Victory last summer, tweeted out offers of his services to two prestigious European clubs struggling with injuries and poor results.

Perhaps owing to the time he’s dedicated to philanthropy, Honda extended the generosity to Manchester United, who are currently 10th in the Premier League with a mediocre 2-3-2 record.

“Give me an offer. I don’t need money but I need to play with great team and great team mate!” Honda tweeted to the English superclub on Friday.

Two days later, the target of his pitch was Italian first-division stragglers AC Milan, where Honda arrived as a heralded No. 10 in January 2014 and departed in disappointment just three years later.

“I have always wanted to help you. Call me when you need me!” wrote Honda.

The 33-year-old has a reputation for shoving as many irons in the fire as he can find. His management company runs soccer schools across the world as well as several clubs — in addition to overseeing his various business and charity efforts.

His groundbreaking announcement last summer that he would take over as volunteer general manager — essentially a shadow head coach — of Cambodia’s senior and Olympic national teams was met with adoration by Japanese fans, but hesitancy from outside observers who questioned whether or not the dead-ball maestro was qualified to run two national sides despite not possessing any coaching licenses.

Honda pushed back at the time, claiming that the current licensing system was unnecessary and in need of drastic overhauls.

One year later, he’s still trying to sway a public that isn’t entirely convinced.
