The Xhosas, moving south away from the Zulus, hit the Fish River in Eastern Cape roughly the same time as the British moving east (Boers all having fucked off by now) so the entire west bank was filled up with British settlers, the 1820 Settlers, to stop them moving further west. Which is why you have cities called East London.
Unfortunately after the war there was a massive population boom in Africa of black africans so the original homelands, modelled on the US system of Indian Reserves, where black people of various tribes could run their own countries, became massively over populated. The same thing happened in Kenya - when the British arrived they chose to build estates in the cool highlands, where nobody lived. At that time Kenya's population was about a mil or so. All of a sudden there's 20 million Mau Maus and parents can no longer give their children land. South Africa's population did the same post war.
To compare it to the US, remember that 90% of the Indians were dead of pox. When the Pilgrims turned up near to Plymouth Rock there were fields and orchards, all ready for harvest but only one dude alive, who fortunately spoke English and was keen to make new friends after a depressing few years. In addition, most provinces, especially the Northern Province, Western and Northern Cape will probably cease to have reliable rain or have much-reduced within 5 years.
