I think there'll always be an Ed visa, and some kind of retirement option, just like in Thailand.

I dislike it when Thailand "shakes the tree" and shake out people from an obviously superior country, it's full of resentment. They can't stand on their own as a people, so they resort to laws to make things "equal." Right, more like, they don't want to get to work, so they inculcate a natural laziness and poor performance on their part by restricting your right to work or even exist in their society.

Don't like that. Talk about mollycoddled.

Cambodia may just be a safe haven for now, it's not going anywhere south anytime soon, really. Only radical government change would instill that kind of paranoia ...

Times are changing? YOU ASKED FOR IT. You who wanted a more "regulated, lawful country" have just asked for a little bit of home in a formerly super unregulated country ...

Now taxes have to be enforced because roads have to be built and who knows, maybe they'll now make you go to court too, for a TRAFFIC VIOLATION, and waste all your precious time while they bumble through their governmental (yes, I wrote govern-mental!) mess...

Actually I'm waiting to see a work permit regulation for volunteers, simply because they cause so much harm. It needs to be controlled. Recently I have met a Portuguese here in Siem Reap who volunteers to teach English (actually plenty of them here - almost a kind of invasion). Problem was that he hardly spoke any English. I think one really has to control such stupidities.

Every time I speak to a Khmer who speaks 'murican as a second language, I'm tempted to agree with you. Although I think you'll find the bigger problem is not volunteers, it's unqualified teachers.

Most of the volunteers (whatever they do) are unqualified, aren't they ? There might be exceptions, and they should get a work permit .....but these normal peasants who flee unemployment and economical stagnation in their own countries......no !

Agreed, both, unqualified volunteers and unqualified professionals shouldn't be here. Fact is that the mass -the sheer quantity- of unqualified volunteers hinder qualified personal from getting a job and that again is probably the reason (or at least one reason) why this country hasn't seen much (positive)development within the past decade.

Pretty broad statements, but I agree with some of it in principle - and not going to bicker over the rest.
