German Tourist, Markus Steinbach, Found Dead on Koh Phi Phi Rocks

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

German Tourist, Markus Steinbach, Found Dead on Koh Phi Phi Rocks

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Death of German tourist in Phi Phi reaches top level of Thai police
30 August 2018
A top police spokesman has commented on the as yet unsolved death of a German tourist found on rocks at Koh Phi Phi.

Pol Col Krissana Pattanacharoen said that national police chief Chakthip Chaijinda is being kept closely informed of developments.

Fifty year old Markus Steinbach was found on Tuesday evening in a sandy crevice on rocks near the Chao Thai Mai (Chao Le) cemetery.

He was fully clothed and had a green bag with him.

There were cuts to his nose and left side of his head and both ankles.

He had been staying in the Erawan Hotel and there was no sign of theft from the victim.

An examination by local medical personnel failed to ascertain a cause of death so the body has been taken for further examination from the morgue in Krabi to Surat Thani.

Pol Col Krissana, speaking at the RTP HQ, said it looks like the tourist fell but they want to be sure.

No explanation was given by Daily News as to why a case such as this was being commented upon nationally. Such matters are usually handled by local forces at the scene of incidents.

German tourist’s island death could be accident or suicide, say police
August 31, 2018
The body of Markus Steibach, 50, was found on Wednesday night lying near a rock formation on the beach next to a sea gypsy graveyard in Ban Laem Dong village on popular Koh Phi Phi.

The man appeared to have wounds to his eyelids and left ear and bruises on both ankles and was believed to have been dead for 12 hours.

On Thursday, Koh Phi Phi police station’s inspector Pol Lt-Colonel Chokdee Mabang led officers to interrogate the manager and staff of Erawan Hotel on the island where the German stayed.

Pichai Chaiwongkham, the manager, said the tourist had checked in on August 24 and was scheduled to leave on September 2. He was last seen alive on August 27. Pichai said anti-depressant medicine was found in Steibach’s room.

Pol Lt-Colonel Santipoj Nuanruang, deputy inspector of the Phi Phi police station, said police are waiting for results of a post-mortem at Surat Thani Hospital to rule out murder.
