Esports, or E-sports ?
Esports makes bow at Jakarta Asian Games
August 27, 2018
JAKARTA (Reuters) – Skinny, pale and sitting in front of a computer, Lee Sang-hyeok doesn’t look much like a traditional Olympic athlete.

But that is exactly what he and his fellow professional esports gamers could be if demonstrations held at the Asian Games in Jakarta this week prove successful.

Esports appeared at a major multi-sport event for the first time on yesterday, raising the possibility of gamers earning the same Olympic gold medals as those won by American swimmer Michael Phelps or Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.

Six titles, starting with Arena of Valor and including League of Legends (LOL) and Pro Evolution Soccer (PES), will feature, in what could be the first step towards inclusion in the Olympic Games.

In November last year, the International Olympic Committee recognised esports as a sporting activity and it will be a full medal event at the 2022 Asian Games.

At the 2018 Asian Games, so far there are some interesting "sports" that have been added, such as E-sports for the young and Bridge for the oldies. We can suggest some additional sports at the next Games, like How Much Can You Win at Roulette in 5mns, and the Slot-Machine play-offs should also draw a good crowd.

Asian Games 2018: 'Persistent' Indonesian billionaire wins bridge bronze aged 78

28 August 2018
The Indonesian billionaire whose "persistence" helped convince Asian Games organisers to include bridge has won bronze in the competition.

Michael Bambang Hartono, one of the Games' oldest competitors at 78, is worth an estimated $11.7bn, making him the world's 75th wealthiest person.

He and five team-mates finished joint third with Chinese Taipei in the supermixed team event in Indonesia.

"If you want to be a good leader and a successful man, play bridge," he said.

"Bridge is like business. First you get the data, the information. You analyse the information, and then you make a decision. So business, real life and bridge are the same."

A 16 year old Indonesian player has become the first winner of an E-Sports event at the Asian Games. For the moment, this is still purely a performance sport, but it may well be upgraded to an official sport for the Asian Games in China in 2022.

Ridel Yesaya Sumarandak won the gold medal after finishing in the final to beat Huang Henghui in the Clash Royale. The Chinese won the silver medal and Vietnamese player Huynh Duc Huyi won a bronze medal.

However, the Olympic Games Medal has not been officially commissioned in the medal table. Because this is E-Sports's first appearance at the big event as a performance show only.

But China, which has been tasked with hosting Asian Games in four years time, in 2022, would like to see this as a medal-winning sport, the same as any other.

No Celebrations or Parties, Beer and Smoking Banned; Asian Games Crack Down on Unhealthy Behaviour

Asian Games cracks down on booze
By AFP
JAKARTA, 29 August 2018: Asian Games organisers have cracked down on boozing in the athletes’ villages, Indonesian officials said Monday, warning competitors that the consumption of alcohol is “not allowed” and unhealthy.

Athletes who have already finished their events and officials were flouting rules against drinking in the villages, said Harry Warganegara of Games organising committee Inasgoc.

“There were some who came in with beer… We have prevented that, many bottles,” said Warganegara.

“We inspect. They cannot bring it in… It’s not healthy. Smoking is also not allowed.”

Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country, banned the sale of alcohol in most convenience stores and small shops outside holiday hotspot Bali in 2015, although it is still widely available in supermarkets, bars and hotels.

Most Indonesians are moderate Muslims and alcohol has long been available, but growing opposition from politicians pushing a more conservative brand of Islam has created an uncertain climate.

Warganegara was responding to complaints that athletes were bored of the food and drink served at the accommodation provided for competitors.

“We cannot control the athletes 100%. (They say) ‘I have already lost anyway, I’m an official, I’m not playing, I can drink.’ But they can’t be like that,” he said.
