The crackdown on out-of-season fishing continues...
Crackdown on illegal fishing in Tonle Sap
August 21, 2018
Pursat provincial police and fishery administration officials cracked down on a large scale illegal fishing operation along Tonle Sap lake and seized equipment including over 5,300 fishing nets in Kandieng district’s Raing Til commune.
District police chief Liv Seng Him yesterday said that Sunday’s crackdown involved around 20 officers who searched the Prek Kampong Kuch and Prek Tul areas along the lake in the commune’s Cha Rus village.
Mr Seng Him said that the officers seized the nets and about 2,500 poles and also released 150 kilograms of fish back into the Tonle Sap.
“We did not find the owners of the equipment, but we suspect that they were locals,” he said. “The fishing nets were put up although it is not the fishing season.”

Crackdown nets more than one tonne of fish
August 24, 2018
Authorities in Tboung Khmum province’s O’raing Ov district on Wednesday seized several kilometres of small-hole fishing nets, bamboo poles and more than one tonne of small fish during a crackdown on illegal fishing on Kapit lake, according to officials.
The large-scale operation was carried out by officials from the district fishery administration, provincial department of agriculture, district and commune police, and also local fishermen.
Mien commune police chief Choun Song said that the operation was one of many which are being carried out to stop off-season fishing on the lake. [Off-season is from June until October.] Mr Song said that the type of nets seized during Wednesday’s crackdown were prohibited even during the fishing season because the holes were very small and could trap very small fish.
