International car hire on Cambodian licence
International car hire on Cambodian licence
Back in the good old days when cambodia had an international standard (plastic credit card size) driving licence I was able to hire cars with it in Germany, the USA, the UK, Ireland and Thailand without question.
Sadly Cambodia has regressed in this area and now issues a ridiculous paper licence. I tried to hire a car with it in Thailand last year but the car hire rep literally laughed in my face when I produced the paper, and instead accepted my out of date plastic one. I’m about to hit first world countries again and will need to hire cars, armed only with the silly paper licence.
Has anyone successfully managed to hire a car abroad with the new format ‘licence’, and did it go smoothly?

I haven't seen the paper licence you're talking about, but would it be possible to laminate it, to make it look more 'sturdy'?

Re: International car hire on Cambodian licence
they look silly and fake
you could laminate it but itll just look like a piece of paper thats been laminated
ID cards are also the same crappy paper

^^^ what he said. They really are shocking. I have queried some Khmer’s about it and the only line they give me is the spin they have heard that it is ‘waterproof’ paper. My answer that the old licences were waterproof anyway gets met with a vacant stare.

For a couple of dollars you can get it printed onto a plastic card.General Mackevili wrote:LoL!Bosco wrote:I tried to hire a car with it in Thailand last year but the car hire rep literally laughed in my face...

That’s what I did, I keep the original at home and carry the copy. It’s much more durable and actually looks like a license!

Are you talking about the Cambodian National ID Cards? They are good quality, hard plastic types with a biometric chip in them, not crappy paper like the new driving licenses.
