Water festival comes back !!!

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Water festival comes back !!!

Post by phuketrichard »

I had a great time in 2008 as was living across the Japanese bridge, so was in the center of it for the out of town Khmers that came in with their boats. :thumb:

While many local expats seem to leave during this period i found it was a great time to be in Phnom Phen.
Cambodia's Water Festival is to return to the capital this year for the first time since 2010, when a stampede on a bridge packed with revellers killed more than 350 people.

Officials announced yesterday that the traditional event, which marks the end of the rainy season and the reversing course of the Tonle Sap, will be held over three days in early November.

“Our country will celebrate the Water Festival as normal, the way we always have in front of the Royal Palace for three days, November 5, 6 and 7

:( Well, that's bad news. Cambodians have always had difficulties to learn from the past.

Warning! Graphic pic of previous water festival:

Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

Ahh, now I understand how spoilers work and why we have it. Thanx for creating that spoiler for me. I had no clue.

No prob. Seemed relevant, but I'm guessing most would want a heads up on it...

I remember that night well.

I spoke a lot less Cambodian and my neighbours were trying to tell me what happened. My ex girlfriend at the time was freaked out because she had just gotten off the bridge, and has seen it but wasn't exactly sure what was happening.

My neighbors were actually inviting me to come with them to Calemette Hospital and "check out the scene," and likely post Facebook pics.
