Poipet: The latest real estate boomtown
August 8, 2018
Cambodia’s northwestern border town of Poipet is fast becoming a rival to Sihanoukville in terms of real estate development.

Poipet, which borders Thailand and hosts an important border crossing between the two neighboring countries, is in the middle of a building boom. Casinos, hotels, commercial buildings, and residential developments are going up in different parts of the town, fueled by massive foreign investments and an economic boom. Property values have gone up in many parts of Poipet as a result.

A part of Banteay Meanchey Province and occupying 2,620,000 square meters, Poipet is divided into three sangkats, namely: Poipet, Phsar Kandal and Nimeth. The town is home to more than 140,000 residents, both Cambodians and foreigners.

Poipet Airport gets official approval
23 October 2018
A project to build Poipet’s first airport has been greenlighted by the government, with total investment estimated at $40 to $50 million, according to the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation.

Aiming to capitalise on the rising number of tourists in a province that is industrialising quickly, the new airport will be built on more than 100 hectares in Banteay Meanchey’s Poipet, in the border with Thailand.

The project has been submitted by Poipet Airport Investment, a locally-owned entity, said Chanserey Vutha, spokesman for SSCA.

“The government approved the airport in Poipet back in May. Actually, the company got permission to build the airport in 2007. They now want to start building, so they were required to submit the project for approval once again.

“The company already owns the land. From what we know, they have a strong financial position so we are sure they have the resources to complete the project.

“This is an interesting project because Poipet has great potential not only as a tourism destination, but also as a commercial and investment hub. We have a lot of special economic zones in the province,” he said.

Oum Reatrey, deputy governor of Banteay Meanchey province, told Khmer Times, however, that he is yet to receive any information from the government regarding the airport project.

“Here at the provincial level, we haven’t seen any documentation regarding this investment,” he said.

Ho Vandy, secretary-general of the Cambodia National Tourism Alliance, said the new infrastructure will allow more gamblers to visit the province.
“I believe the airport is a great idea because it will reduce transportation times for those that want to come to Poipet for gambling.

It's not only the so called boom town's is it, property on the market now all over the country is high priced. Rental is going the same way. And I don't know who are buying, but it certainly is not all Chinese. So how are Khmer finding the money to buy land plots and build a house.
Always "hope" but never "expect".

More Chinese punters flock to Poipet
Cambodian border town could get even busier with revived rail service.
By Bangkok Post - April 28, 2019

Chinese people are beginning to flock to the Cambodian border town of Poipet, which has become the country’s second most popular gambling destination after the coastal city of Sihanoukville.

There is no official record of how many Chinese are in Poipet. However, one estimate suggests that between 8,000 and 10,000 Chinese are in the city, either involved in the construction or gaming industry, or staying as short-term tourists who go there for gambling.

Poipet could become even busier now that Thailand and Cambodia have officially opened the “missing link” from Aranyaprathet to restore cross-border rail service for the first time in 46 years.

Big C opens first supermarket in Cambodia
8 Oct 2019 at 18:58
Big C Poipet had its soft opening on Saturday, the company announced on its Facebook page.

“A soft opening for the Poipet Hypermarket was held under our vision to be the leading Thai retailer with customers at heart,” the Khmer Times on Tuesday quoted the announcement as saying.

The soft opening comes just eight months after the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) approved the project. Poipet’s newest shopping destination sits on more than two hectares of land. It is not known when the grand opening will be held.

The event elicited a great deal of excitement, with people from all walks of life crowding the supermarket.

The opening made Cambodia the fourth country to host a Big C branch. In addition to Thailand, Big C already has a presence in Vietnam and Laos. Big C focuses on mid-to-low income customers with a wide selection of goods at affordable prices.

It was earlier reported that Big C invested US$6.8 million (206 million baht) in the project, which is now the most high-profile shopping destination in that part of the kingdom.

The new supermarket is expected to help bring more jobs and progress to the border city. The company said earlier in its application with the CDC that the project will create more than 1,200 jobs.

Poipet, a town of more than 200,000 people on the Thai-Cambodian border, is an important trading hub. Lately, the city, which is part of Banteay Meanchey province, is getting more attention from investors in Thailand, China, and other countries.
